Nelder Grove

Just a few miles north of Oakhurst lies a giant sequoia grove that's waiting to be explored by you and your four-legged pal! Situated in the north section of the Sierra National Forest, Nelder Grove is a beautiful montane forest where you and Fido can get up close and personal with the area's stately sequoias, away from the tourist crowds.

A quieter alternative to the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park, Nelder Grove contains about 100 mature giant sequoia trees standing side by side with second-growth pine, incense cedar, and fir. Five trails meander through the grove, giving you and your pooch more than one way to explore the site. The 1-mile Shadow of the Giants Trail weaves through a narrow draw, with Nelder Creek flowing down the middle of it. In addition to several mature sequoias, this serene route features various wildflowers such as dogwoods, cedars, lady slipper orchids, and western azaleas. Educational markers dot the way for self-guided tours.

Another trail that's worth checking out is the Bull Buck Tree Loop. This 0.75-mile path will lead you and your pup to the Bull Buck Tree, which is pawhaps the most impressive tree in the grove. One of the largest giant sequoias in the world, it has a height of 246 feet and a ground level circumference of 99 feet! It is also taller and older than the Mariposa Grove's famed Grizzly Giant. If you and Fido are feeling extra adventurous, hit the 3-mile Graveyard of the Giants Trail, which will bring you to an area with several trees that were killed by a historic fire.

Furry friends are always welcome at Nelder Grove as long as they remain on a 6-foot leash. Be sure to clean up after your canine companion—it only takes a few minutes and it's good petiquette!
