If your pooch loves hiking through the uniquely scenic desert, the North Lykken Trail is the perfect option. Rugged desert cliffs, cacti galore, and pawsome views of Palm Springs make this trail one hike your pooch will want to write home about.
The trailhead is situated at the end of a residential road. Parking is scarce, so try to arrive early to secure a spot. Besides, hiking in the early morning or evening helps avoid the blazing heat of the valley. Although this trail is relatively short, it sure packs a punch. Â Follow the trail as it begins its ascent. Tread carefully on the loose rocks and make sure your doggo stays on the designated trail. After braving your way through a few sets of switchbacks, you will arrive at the top where you and your pooch can look out over the Coachella Valley and get great views of Palm Springs. Picnic tables are available at the overlook, so bring a sandwich and some biscuits for your pup and soak in the puptacular vistas while you eat.
When you’re ready to head home, head down the mountain the way you came. Or, if you want to continue hiking, follow the trail past the picnic tables down into Chino Canyon and out to Cielo Drive. If you opt for this route, arrange for a pick up. There’s also a connecting path that leads to the nearby Palm Springs Art Museum.
Since there is no shade on the trail and temperatures shoot off the thermometer in the summer, plan on hiking it during another time of year. Remember, if the sand is too hot to touch, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. Even when you hike North Lykken Trail during the “cooler” months in Palm Springs, bring more than enough water for both you and your pup. The inclines will leave you gulping H2O! Don’t forget to clean up after your dog. Above all else, enjoy hiking alongside your furry BFF!Â
