Can you think of a better place to be than hiking with your fur-ever friend in the rolling hills of California? Wild Horse Trail is a pup-tastic hike in the city of Palm Springs.
Make sure your pup is in tip-top shape for this adventure, as the trail is rated as intermediate to difficult rating! You will begin your trek in a very well-shaded area, perfect for those hotter days. Pick up the trailhead on S. Palm Canyon Drive at the Palm Canyon parking lot. The trail begins at the east end of the lot.
The hike will take you 2.7 miles out and back, meandering through hills and the Coachella Valley and offering spectacular views when you reach the summit of Murray Hill. The footing is a natural surface with lots of sand as well. The trail is open to hikers, and of course horses, as the name implies! Because this is a shared trail, Fido will need to remain on leash throughout your journey for everyone’s safety. Lots of wildflowers abound on this trail and it is lightly traveled, making it a great respite to spend some quiet, quality time with your fur-ever friend. You will both enjoy the end of the trail which offers boulders to sit and enjoy the views.
After heavy rains, it can be confusing to keep to the designated trail as there are sand washes that cover the ground, but for the most part, this trail is well-packed and well-maintained. It is advised not to use the trail November through February.
Please note that the trail climbs steadily, and it is best to offer your pup plenty of breaks along the way to catch his breath and rest his paws. There are no restrooms along the trail so plan accordingly. Wild Horse Trail is your ticket to fun in Palm Springs!
Snakes can be found on and off the trail. Afternoon sun is very strong – please bring proper sunscreen equipment for you both.
