Are your looking for a great hiking place in Simi Valley, California? If you and your pup are excited to spend the day together and do some serious walking, check out Rocky Peak Park where pawrific trails await.
Begin your trek at the trailhead located at the park entrance. On crowded days, there is additional parking across the freeway bridge, just outside the main entrance. This beautiful hike through the desert is 4.75 miles one way and is rated as moderate. It is perfect for pups with higher-than-average fitness levels as there are several steep climbs along the way.
You will find a bench just ½ mile from the trailhead which is a great place to rest Fido’s paws. You will be on a former fire road which is plenty wide for other hikers to pass and offers scenic valley views. The trail continues its upward climb alongside native brush providing critical habitat for the area’s wildlife. As you get closer to the 3-mile mark, you and your pup will have to climb over some rather large sandstone boulders in the path.Â
You will pass a connection with the Chumash Trail, another area trail which heads west if you want to increase your hiking time. Once you reach the summit of Rocky Peak, you will be treated to an unbelievable view of the Santa Susana Mountains and the park’s entire 4800 acres. Give Fido a paw-five for his incredible effort.
This hike is unshaded, so it is important to keep your excursion to either early morning hours or seasons when the temperatures are more moderate. Bring plenty of water for this journey and offer your fur-ever friend plenty of stops along the way.
