Next time your pup wants to hike, grab the leash and head out on the Rocky Valley Trail. Located inside Pinnacle Mountain State Park, this pawsome trail is conveniently located next to the Visitors Center. Your pooch can commune with nature as they wander through the Fulk Mountains and near the Maumelle River.
As you venture down the trail, you enter a beautiful forest, and within a few minutes, Quarry Pond comes into view. Stop here so your pup can check out the scenery, then continue hiking under the canopy of trees. As you might have guessed, this hike cuts through an old rock quarry, so your pooch will see several unique rock formations that range in size and shape. Although this trail is easily identifiable, green trail markers help keep you on the right path.
The trail gradually descends into a valley and gets closer to the Maumelle River. About midway around the loop you have the option to either continue on the Rocky Valley Trail or take a half mile detour on the East Quarry Trail. This side trail is a puptastic option if your furry friend wants to add mileage to the hike. Follow the red trail markers up the hill to the H.L. Dickinson Overlook. Paws for a break while enjoying vistas of the Maumelle River and Pinnacle Mountain. Snap a furrific photo with your pal before heading back to the Rocky Valley Trail.
Back at the Visitors Center, there’s another scenic overlook that is reached by descending a wooden staircase. Here you can get even more puptacular views of the Maumelle and Arkansas River. Not only does the Visitors Center have restrooms, it also has water fountains. So be sure to fill up your water bottles before setting off on the trail. Also, carry a couple clean up bags and be sure to pick up after your pup. No bones about it, your doggo is going to love this trail!
