Sky Ranch is a property owned and protected by the John Muir Land Trust, nestled into the hills of Southwest Martinez. This 702 acre property proudly offers glorious views of the Suisun Bay and Mount Diablo. The ridges, hills, and wildlife on the property can be explored through a network of trails. Best of all, once you’re within the John Muir Land Trust property, Fido is free to romp around off-leash like a wild dog. Just be sure your doggo stays nearby and under voice control!
The park entrance and trailhead can be found along Dutra Road. There is parking on the left side of the stables and trailhead, but there are only four parking spots so you may want to carpool. From here, you’ll take the Contra Costa Feeder Trail #1 one mile up to the park entrance, where you’ll find the Sky Ranch information kiosk and trail maps. Keep in mind that the Feeder Trail is a fire road and not within Sky Ranch yet, so you’ll need to keep your pooch leashed on this portion. Just the Feeder Trail is an adventure in itself, winding through native plants, crossing the Franklin Creek and climbing the scenic Franklin Ridge.
From the Sky Ranch Kiosk you and your pupper have a couple options. Many people choose the famous Dutra Loop, which is about 2.5 miles. An offshoot of the Dutra Loo Trail is the 3 mile Tina Batt Trail. This trail is also a loop, and offers breathtaking views Mount Diablo, Contra Costa and the Carquinez Strait. Along any of these trails you and your dog may see or sniff out some interesting wildlife, like deer, fox, coyote, or red-tailed hawk.
There are some endangered or special status animals that call this place their home, so please make sure your doggo doesn’t disturb the wildlife. There are no restrooms or drinking fountains within the park so you’ll need to come prepared. Don’t forget the waste bags and drinking water for your parched puppy! You and your dog are sure to enjoy the fresh air and freedom within the hills at Sky Ranch.
