St. Johns-Willamette Cove Loop is a woofderful walk to take with your beloved pooch. The route wanders throughout the St. Johns neighborhood. There are a lot of twists and turns, so pay attention!
The trail begins inside Cathedral Park beneath the
infamous St. John’s Bridge. Follow the Cathedral Park pathway until you reach
Bradford Street. Head north for two
blocks, then take a right on Saint Louis Avenue. This will take you up to
Willamette Boulevard, where you turn left. Walk along this street for only a block, then take right on Catlin
Avenue. Follow Catlin Avenue until Lombard Street, then turn right. Wander down
this street for a few blocks which was once the center of St. Johns. Turn right
onto Charleston, then left on Ivanhoe, and right again onto Richmond Avenue.
Stay on this road for five blocks until you reach Decatur Street, where you
turn left.
From Decatur, make a right on Mohawk Avenue, then a quick left onto Crawford Street. Take a right on Van Buren Avenue and follow it as it turns into Bradford Street, then into Tyler Street. This will lead you right back to Crawford Street, where you turn right. Check out the Benson-Chaney House, a Victorian era mansion that’s sits atop a bluff. Hang a left on Polk, walk up to Willamette Boulevard and turn right. Walk along this road for just a block and a half, then turn right on Edgewater Avenue. This road winds through a natural area that is full of trees.Â
When you meet the railroad
tracks, turn right. The trail parallels the tracks as you head west. Eventually
it passes Richmond Street. Follow this then take a left onto Crawford Street.
Walk a couple blocks west and you are back at Cathedral Park. Whew!
It may take a little extra effort to navigate, but this urban trail will make your pup’s tail wag, so it will be worth it! Bring along any hiking essentials, such as water and clean-up bags, and enjoy this unique path through the city.
