Description

Need the low down on fur-iendly trails in the Low Country? We have the pawfect spot for you! The Swamp Fox Trail provides an easy dog-friendly walk through beautifully varied landscapes of the South Carolina coast! The grassy savannas, pine forests, swamps, and creeks create a biologically diverse ecosystem teeming with deer, wild turkey, songbirds, and waterfowl. Furry bird enthusiasts will be excited to know these forests are also home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker!

This path runs through the Francis Marion National Forest and is part of the 350-mile Palmetto Trail. The Swamp Fox Trail is 47 miles long, so we suggest tackling it in sections to really get the full experience! Three separate trailheads allow you to customize your walk, and each trailhead is just as spectacular as the last! There are camping options as well if your pack wants to extend their stay. The picturesque setting and abundant wildlife aren't the only things fascinating about this trail; it also has quite an interesting history as well! The name "Swamp Fox" is derived from Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, who was known for his guerrilla warfare tactics in the very swamps this trail traverses!

This route is truly a wilderness path, so be sure you come prepared with all the provisions you may need! Bring plenty of water, snacks, and extra clothing in case one of those coastal evening rain showers hit. Make sure Fido is up-to-date on flea and tick meds as well -- sand fleas and deer ticks love this area! Big crowds shouldn't be an issue here, so your pooches need not worry about trail congestion. Do note that horses are also allowed on the trail, so be sure your buddy plays well with larger four-legged friends! The trail is open 24 hours year-round, so your pack can get their adventure on any time they feel the need! So leash up and head out -- your pack will be furever grateful you did!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.

Cautions & Considerations
Warm weather brings biting insects and high temperatures, so come prepared with sunscreen, insect repellant, and plenty of water for your crew. This is a popular hunting ground -- know the hunting seasons and wear bright colors during open season! This path can get quite muddy and slippery during wet weather, so it's best to avoid this trail during those times. The elevation gain information for this path is unavailable.
