Description

If you're looking for a place near Anchorage to go hiking with your pal, check out the Williwaw Trail. This pawesome backcountry route takes you to a series of alpine lakes in a scenic, high mountain valley. On this pathway, you'll have a steady climb upwards to the bench area. Interior sections and trails in this park close for the winter. Check with the Alaska DNR about the open status of the area before you plan your trip.

You can access the trail from the Glen Alps Trailhead. There are restrooms available here. To get to the Williwaw Trail, take the connector path to the Ballpark/Black Lake Trail. When you meet the eastern side of the Middle Fork Loop, follow it to the north to intersect with your route. The beginning of this path goes through mud and bogs. As you climb upward, the forested road gets better. Before long, you'll have stunning views of Williwaw Peak and the surrounding ridges. This mountain towers above others in the area, and it is the highest one in the Front Range. Continue your climb above the tree line to get your first glimpse of the lakes. When you get to the small waterfall, you're at the end of this pathway.

Fido can run free as you hike on the trail, but make sure they have a leash on in the parking lot area. Protect the delicate ecosystem by collecting and packing out any waste. Bring water or a purification system for your trek to avoid Giardiasis.

The trail to the Williwaw Lakes is a pawtastic place to hike with your pooch. You'll be able to enjoy the crisp alpine air and amazing scenery in this rugged wilderness. For your safety, consider traveling with a group when you come here. Come prepared for emergencies like avalanches, and let someone know your planned itinerary.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
