Does your pup fancy a lovely walk along the mighty Mississippi River? Then an afternoon walk on the Winchell Trail is definitely in order. This woofderful trail saunters down the west banks of the river and provides amazing scenery to two legged and four legged visitors alike.
The trail begins just off 44th Avenue.
From here it travels north along puptacular bluffs that overlook the river.
Some parts of the trail are paved, but for the most part it is a natural surface.Â
The West River
Parkway runs parallel to the Winchell Trail, but it’s a multiuse pathway while Winchell
Trail is just for pedestrians. There are a few sets of stairs that connect
the two trails. You will also find spur trails that veer off of Winchell Trail
and lead into the surrounding woods. If your pup needs some adventure in their
life, take a side journey and see what you can discover in the Mississippi
Gorge.
Even though they haven’t left the city, your furry friend
will feel like they are trekking through the wilderness. The trail runs through an oak savanna
restoration project and is always surrounded by trees. During the fall, the
colorful leaves make this an extra beautiful hike. There are plenty of spots
where you and your canine hiker can paws for a break and admire the gorgeous
scenery.
Before you and your pupster leave home, make sure you fill up a couple water
bottles. You and your doggo are sure to need a refreshing drink during your
hike. Also, pack some clean up bags so you can pick up after your pooch. Make no mistake, a hike on this trail will
leave your pup’s tail waggin’!
