Description

Arkansas has lots of natural places to explore and enjoy the outdoors, and it's even better when you can do so with your best friend. The Woodpecker Hollow Trail is a dog-friendly trail that allows you and your pup to do just that while enjoying other aspects of the nearby area. The trail opens up from the Denby Point Campground, offering a four-foot wide nature trail made from packed dirt.

The trail is inside the Ouachita National Forest, which hosts over 1.8 million acres of thick forests, open fields, and Lake Ouachita. Woodpecker Hollow Trail gives you a lovely glimpse of all the features of the forest and includes sights of natural wildlife and trees. Along the trail are wood cabins, with old wooden benches to sit on and view the area. The name of the trail comes from the abundance of woodpeckers in the area which make their presence known by the constant pecking of trees.

Viewing the wildlife is great, but for some more scenic views, head up the trail that connects to Lake Ouachita. The trail opens up to a small area and natural beach along the southern part of the lake, which is great for fishing or swimming. Dogs are even allowed to swim in the lake.

Although the trail is short and only offers benches, you and Fido will find plenty back inside the camp that the trail starts in. Restrooms and water fountains are available, alongside a playground, boat launch, dump station, and showers. Parking in the campground is free, but if you want to stay the night with your pup, it'll cost a fee, but the campsite is dog-friendly.

The trail may end, but it connects to a number of other trails to keep the fun going. After enjoying such a lovely walk with your pup and seeing all the sights, how could you and Fido want to turn back without more of a taste?

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
Trail Features
Loose Terrain, Muddy, Beach, Lake, Easy Incline, Mountains
Scenic, Abundant Wildlife
Cautions & Considerations
The trail is in the middle of the Ouachita National Forest, meaning wildlife is unrestricted and you can come across deer and bears, so be on the lookout. The trail allows mountain biking, but since it's not too wide, pay attention since you'll have to move out of the way of the bikers. The trail along the river can get soggy and muddy due to the water.
