Wag! Walkers know Boston Harbor Islands
Boston Harbor Islands is the largest open space area in Eastern Massachusettes. With 34 islands and mainland areas covered in nature trails, this is the perfect spot to spend a day or a weekend exploring with your furry best friend. Boston Harbor Islands is just minutes from downtown Boston, but the incredible mix of ecosystems – from intertidal wetlands, beaches and coastal bluffs to fields, shrublands, and forests – feel like you're miles away. This is a perfect area to visit in spring, summer, and fall to explore these amazing landscapes with your dog. They'll love sniffing the salty breeze and feeling the dirt under his paws. There are a variety of hiking paths that offer wilderness excursions through forested lands or historical tours that wind through old military barracks, but keep in mind that dogs are only allowed at the mainland parks and prohibited from being on the islands, in order to protect wildlife.
What is the terrain like in Boston Harbor Islands?
The terrain in Boston Harbor Islands varies significantly from park to park. This coastal National and State Park is special because it contains so many different ecosystems in one beautiful landscape. Though dogs are only allowed in the mainland parks, you and Fido can still find trails that expose you to rolling hills, forested paths, and rocky coastline views. Most of the dog-friendly trails are an easy to moderate hike. Some are only one mile long on a paved road, while others might take a few hours and are worth a day to enjoy the views and sniff the trees. There are many paved paths on Deer Island to follow, while other areas have both paved and gravel or dirt trails. Each park has plenty of green space for your dog to sniff or roll around and enjoy as a break from his usual city walks. He'll love all the new smells and you'll enjoy all the beautiful sites.
How many greenways are there in Boston Harbor Islands?
Dog walks in Boston Harbor Islands mainland parks will be filled with natural and historical wonders, and the terrain is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. Some of the trails, like Webb-Memorial State Park, are heart-healthy and very dog-friendly, perfect for an easy stroll or for an older dog who enjoys a nice meander. Many of the hiking trails are all natural gravel with uneven terrain and beautiful foliage for sniffing. If your dog is more interested in a wilderness trail, you can take him for a jog through the World's End Reservation, an old carriage trail that winds through rolling hills with a beautiful view of the Boston Skyline. All of the dog-friendly trails require pups to be on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure everyone's safety. Dogs are also allowed at all campsites, but they need to be leashed too. In nature reserves, it's important to be gentle on the wildlife, and dogs that chase could cause harm.
