Wag! Walkers know Downtown
Downtown Boston is the city's central business district and the area is packed with shops and boutiques, restaurants and bars, entertainment venues, and tourist attractions. The downtown area is highly walkable and pedestrian travel is common.

If you stroll the area with your dog, you can visit the Polka Dog Bakery North End, a unique pet supply store with special treats for your canine companion. Are you looking for a bite out? Several dog-friendly restaurants in the downtown region allow your dog to join you in the outdoor seating areas. Dog-friendly restaurants include Red Barn Coffee Roasters, Vintage Restaurant and Lounge, State Street Provisions, and the Landing at Long Wharf.

Dog walkers need to contend with quite a bit of wet weather in Boston as rain is common in the region. Winter weather can be both wet and cold, so waterproof winter gear is a good idea if you want to be able to take your dog out regularly during the winter season.
What is the terrain like in Downtown?
Downtown Boston is a developed urban center with high rise and multi-story buildings. Tall buildings provide shade to streets. This urban area does have some trees along streets and many local greenways with landscaping, but as is typical of business districts, landscaping is minimal in most areas.

The area has many historic buildings providing interest and an irregular street pattern. Bike lanes, one way streets, a freeway, and heavy traffic can make the area difficult to walk around with your dog. Make sure your pup is used to traffic and noise and securely leashed. Sidewalks are present on area streets, providing separate pedestrian ways for people and pets.

The topography of the district is relatively level with only some gentle inclines that do not present an impediment when hiking the region with your dog. The harbor and channel on the east side of downtown are prominent features of the area with marinas and piers, boat traffic, and waterfront businesses.
How many greenways are there in Downtown?
The Boston Common is beautiful large greenery on the west side of the downtown Boston area. Walking paths in the park are a great place for a stroll with your pup and there are designated areas in the park where dogs are allowed off-leash during specified times. The off-leash areas rotate regularly to protect lawn surfaces.
A nearby off-leash park is the Richmond Street Dog Park which is just a few blocks to the east. This enclosed park has a gravel surface, landscaping, cleaning supplies, and seating for dog owners to supervise their pups. Also located just east of downtown is the North End Dog Park. This fenced and gated play area has separate areas for large and small dogs and interesting features such as fire hydrants that produce a water mist to cool your furry friend off, agility equipment, and an artificial grass surface.
There are several other greenways in the district. Some of the larger parks include Nashua Street Park, Union Street Park, and Norma B. Leventhal Park.
