Rain is frequent in this coastal area and an umbrella may be in order. Although many dogs don't care if they get rained on, some don't appreciate it as much as others, so your dog may even benefit from a rain slicker! Winters can be chilly with temperatures falling below the freezing mark and snowstorms of the Atlantic producing inclement weather. Be prepared for weather conditions with warm outerwear and footwear in the winter.
Since the area is hilly, inclines may be strenuous to walk up with your dog. Be sure you are up to climbing back up any hills you choose to walk down! Natural areas border this community on the east and west as this area features parks from the famous 'Emerald Necklace' of the Boston area. A train track runs through the east side of the community and there is industrial activity alongside the tracks on the east side in adjacent Stoneybrook.
Parks that are part of the world famous 'Emerald Necklace', a chain of beautiful, historic and scenic parks in the Boston area, are located in Jamaica Central. One of these parks, the Arnold Arboretum, is located on the western border. This park and the features it contains are within walking distance for residents and their pooches. The 281-acre green space has multiple greenway trails. Be prepared for some climbing if you hike the trails of the Arboretum, but also be prepared for some sweeping views and beautiful old growth trees.
Running along the train tracks to the east of Jamaica Central is Southwest Corridor Park. This linear park features athletic facilities and also walking, jogging, and cycling paths that extend for just under 5 miles along the rail tracks. This location makes a unique greenway, but remember to keep your dog on a leash and stay away from the tracks which can present a hazard.
