Jamaica Plain and the Jamaica Central region are located southwest of urban Boston. The area is primarily residential with schools and churches in the community.  A business corridor exists along South Street and locals that are walking the neighborhood with their canine companions can access shops, grocers, cafes, and other services on this main thoroughfare. Many students, young professionals, and artists make this area their home and businesses such as bookstores and galleries catering to this clientele have developed in the larger Jamaica Plain region.

Rain is frequent in this coastal area and an umbrella may be in order. Although many dogs don't care if they get rained on, some don't appreciate it as much as others, so your dog may even benefit from a rain slicker! Winters can be chilly with temperatures falling below the freezing mark and snowstorms of the Atlantic producing inclement weather. Be prepared for weather conditions with warm outerwear and footwear in the winter.

Jamaica Central has a long history with plenty of buildings in the area dating back to the 1800s. Commercial blocks in this area were developed with brick buildings being erected in the 1870s, which is about the time that triple-decker houses came into fashion. These unique three-story historic homes are plentiful in the area. Landscaping is lush, green, and dense in Jamaica Central with large shade trees, gardens, and lawns on residential properties.

Since the area is hilly, inclines may be strenuous to walk up with your dog. Be sure you are up to climbing back up any hills you choose to walk down! Natural areas border this community on the east and west as this area features parks from the famous 'Emerald Necklace' of the Boston area. A train track runs through the east side of the community and there is industrial activity alongside the tracks on the east side in adjacent Stoneybrook.
