Wag! Walkers know Midtown-Edmondson

Midtown-Edmondson is a neighborhood located a short 10-minute commute west of Baltimore, Maryland’s city center. There are some local corner stores and eateries in the area that residents can reach on foot, but they may have to venture further afield to find larger amenities for their needs.

When walking with your dog in the area, be prepared for cold, snowy winters with warm outerwear and good footwear. Sub-freezing temperatures and snowfall are common during the winter season and severe winter storms may put a wrench in your plans to walk your dog on occasion. Spring and fall are warm, but rainy, so a jacket and umbrella are often required. If your dog doesn't like to get wet, you can even find a doggy umbrella or slicker for your pup. Summers are hot and humid and it may be more pleasant to take your dog out for a daily constitutional in the morning or evening during hot, sticky weather conditions.

What is the terrain like in Midtown-Edmondson?

Midtown-Edmondson is located North of West Franklin Street and east of North Bentalou Street with irregular northern and eastern borders. This community was developed at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, so structures in the area reflect this period. Homes are mostly residential row houses with some commercial buildings.

The CSX train tracks extend through the region and there are some industrial warehouses along the rail lines. Row houses are set close to street fronts and many do not have landscaping in front of them. Some sections have a few trees along streets and sidewalks run along roads, providing safe, separate walkways for people and pups.

There are some gentle inclines in the community, but no steep hills, so people and pets of all mobility levels can get around easily. Some buildings and lots in the district are vacant and unkempt, so debris on undeveloped or unused properties can be hazardous and should be avoided.

How many greenways are there in Midtown-Edmondson?

The Lafayette and Payson Park is located on the north side of Midtown-Edmondson and is easily accessible for residents of the area and their furry friends. The park has a playground and basketball court, some shade trees, and a small lawn.

A few blocks to the east, locals and their pups can walk to the Harlem Square Park and other greenways in this adjacent neighborhood. The Harlem Square Park greenway has a central feature with public art and a monument as well as paved walking paths, open lawns, and beautiful large shade trees. A few benches in the park are ideal for taking a break on a hot summer day to enjoy some shade in this pretty park.

Mt. Olivet and Phelps Lane Park is a short distance to the southwest. This natural park runs along the Gwynns Falls waterway with a pond. There are hiking trails, open fields, and wooded areas to enjoy walks with your canine companion.
