Wag! Walkers know Woodside
Once a Confederate camp and then a farm, this neighborhood is one of the oldest in Silver Spring. Serving as a suburb for Washington DC, it is nearly impossible to find wide open spaces in a quiet neighborhood such as this. The atmosphere extends to its streets and residents rate this neighborhood as extremely walkable. Don’t expect to find any amenities within this space, however, as most residents will need to venture to downtown Silver Springs where restaurants, stores, and other services are more plentiful. Pet stores, groomers, and vets can all be found nearby in the downtown area as well for those seeking to fulfill their pet's needs.
Winters can be rough in this area, with Nor’easters that can swipe through. However, at least two-thirds of the year is dry and walkable. During the summer, keep an eye on the pavement as it can get a little too hot for sensitive paws.
What is the terrain like in Woodside?
While the neighborhood of Woodside is not completely flat, the changes in elevation are very gentle and should not pose a problem for walkers. In fact, for those that are looking to turn their dog walks into exercise, they may be frustrated by the lack of available hills. You will find a lot of people taking advantage of the slight elevation climbs by jogging which may be an option.
Surfaces available while walking vary depending on the street. In some areas, you will find well-maintained sidewalks on both sides with generous grass shoulders that will go a long way towards protecting your pup’s feet. In other areas, there are sidewalks on only one side and some of these have no place for your dog to walk. If you plan to walk on hot days, be sure to either walk early or plan your route to make sure your furry friend spends most of their time on the grass.
How many greenways are there in Woodside?
Despite the small size of the neighborhood, it does have its own park. There is plenty of greenery available here as well as a nice shaded canopy of trees with picnic benches beneath it. Take your pup to play or use it as a rest stop. This may be the only park in the neighborhood, but it is certainly not the only greenway or place to walk. The Rock Creek runs nearby and has a number of trails you can walk. The trails actually extend up north as far as Gaithersburg and south down to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, so you can enjoy as long of a walk as you want. If this trail is too ambitious, for those quiet days, check out the Ellsworth Urban Dog Park which is just north of downtown Silver Spring. It has 3.6 acres and also has a playground so you can bring the entire family, pooch included!
