Introduction

Animal Crossing is an uber-popular game series that’s truly one-of-a-kind. The “point” of the game is whatever you want it to be. Maybe you want to deck out every “nook” (true fans will see what we did there!) and cranny of your town, campsite, or island. Maybe you just want to fish, collect fossils, and catch bugs. Maybe you want to become a “bellionaire”. Or maybe you want to do a little bit of all the above. Your Animal Crossing experience is what you make it.

Considering the stress of everyday life, it’s no surprise that over 10 million people love the wholesome escape route Animal Crossing provides. And what better way to show your love for the series than by naming your fur-baby after your favorite villager?

With nearly 400 villagers in the franchise, it was almost “impawssible” for us to narrow down this list of Animal Crossing dog names to just 15! Need more inspo? Check out our full round-up of Animal Crossing inspired dog names. Now it’s time to get to the good stuff: our all-time favorite Animal Crossing dog names.

#1. Beau

A firm favorite with Animal Crossing fans around the world, Beau features on just about every list of most popular villagers. This chilled-out deer has a “pawsitive” outlook on life. His favorite hobbies include snacking and relaxing. (Which makes him a lot like most pups!) An outdoorsy type through and through, Beau’s home decor is inspired by nature.

#2. Daisy

Is there a more iconic dog name than Daisy? In fact, this name is so “pawpular” that it inspired this friendly canine villager. Daisy wakes up bright and early at 6 AM each morning to make the most of every day. Her dream is to become an archaeologist, so it’s probably safe to say she likes to dig!

#3. Bones

You can probably guess what inspired this lazy villager’s name. Bones resembles a Beagle, and he’s obsessed with snacks. (Seriously, it’s pretty much all he ever talks about.) With a cute catchphrase like “yip yip!”, it’s hard not to love this adorable doggo.

#4. Goldie

Another classic dog name, Goldie the villager is the spitting image of a Golden Retriever. Her catchphrase, “woof”, is nice and simple. She’s also the cover girl for a couple of K.K. Slider albums. (Fun fact: she has a crush on the Lab featured on the cover of Nintendogs!)

#5. Lucky

Die-hard fans love Lucky. Although this dog villager looks like an Egyptian mummy, the official lore states that he wears a full-body cast. (Which is the exact reason why he’s called Lucky!) His unknown injury gave him a new “leash” on life, and his optimism is contagious. This is a “grrreat” name for injury-prone doggos or miracle mutts who have survived and thrived despite life’s trials and tribulations.

#6. Audie

Behind this unique Animal Crossing dog name is a heartwarming story. An elderly fan of the franchise spent over 3,500 hours playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf. When her story went viral, Nintendo decided to name this cute wolf village after her! And the rest, as they say, is history. This sweet story is just one reason why Audie is one of the most “pawpular” villagers in Animal Crossing.

#7. Chief

Chief is a grumpy wolf villager whose dream is to become a poet. Even though he’s a wolf, he resembles a red fox. He’s not particularly nice to the player, but with a little patience and the right approach, he’ll eventually become more friendly. Many fans find his cranky attitude endearing and welcome the challenge of trying to impress him. He’s so popular that he’s even a character in one of the Mario Kart games.

#8. Huck

Long-time fans will no doubt remember Huck, a wholesome froggo who likes to eat so much that he has snack machines in his house. Huck was absent from a few of the games, but recently made a comeback in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Huck might not feature on many top 10 Animal Crossing villager lists, but he’s earned a special place in our hearts.

#9. Tex

The epitome of all things cool, this smug penguin loves sports and rock ‘n’ roll. His top skill is sprinting, apparently. (Which begs the question, how fast can a penguin run?) Don’t let his relaxed expression fool you — Tex is serious about work, play, and life in general.

#10. Mitzi

Full disclosure: Mitzi is a cat. But we think her name is “pawfect” for dogs too! The markings on her paws resemble mittens, which might have inspired her name. She gets along well with villagers of all species and has no trouble making friends. If you’re looking for a name for a social Sheepdog, look no further — you’ve found it!

#11. Tank

This is the “ultimutt” name for giant breeds built like a — you guessed it — tank. Here’s a fun fact about the inspiration for this villager. Allegedly, his name comes from a type of tank called a Rhino Tank. (Which is pretty fitting, considering he’s a rhino.) This WWII-era tank allowed Allied forces to navigate the tricky terrain of Normandy. And the rest, as they say, is history.

#12. Cleo

Sure, Cleo is a doggone cute name for a hound. But this horse villager may have been named after a famous actress and equestrian enthusiast, Cleo Ridgely. Cleo got her start in the silent films of the early 1900s and went on to star in dozens of films over the next 40 years. She also rode horseback from New York to Los Angeles in the early 1910s. Talk about dedication!

#13. Scoot

Competitive, headstrong, and always raring to go, Scoot is a handful! This little duck isn’t afraid of a challenge. His ambition, though admirable, causes friction between him and villagers with lazy personalities. (Which includes many of the dogs in the game.) Despite that, Scoot is a fitting name for dogs who love agility or canine sports.

#14. Coco

Google “best villagers in Animal Crossing” and you’ll likely find Coco on every list. Upon first glance, this rabbit villager doesn’t seem to have eyes. Or the ability to express her emotions. It’s perhaps because of this unusual appearance that she’s so popular with fans. Players looking to invite Coco to their town or island are willing to pay millions of Bells for her!

#15. Dizzy

Last but most certainly not least on our list of top Animal Crossing dog names is Dizzy, an oh-so-adorable elephant. In one of the promo photos for New Horizons, his shirt has a bone on it. Need we say more? Dizzy makes a “grrreat” dog name for a clumsy canine who likes to chase their own tail.
