Wag! Walkers know Brooklyn Hill
Brooklyn Hill is a small neighborhood located just a few blocks northeast of Raleigh’s downtown business district. Its borders are defined by Deveraux Street to the north, N. Boylan Ave to the east, Gaston Street to the west, and Peace Street to the south which is one of Raleigh’s most popular commercial thoroughfares. Attractions in high demand, such as Raleigh Beer Garden or Mellow Mushroom, are right around the corner from the neighborhood as well as Needham Broughton High School, one of Raleigh’s oldest public schools.
The weather in Raleigh is diverse and the city experiences the distinct characteristics of all four seasons. Its summers are typically hot and very humid, meaning it will be important for you and your dog to stay hydrated if you walk during the warmer months. Its winters usually don’t exit the 30 to 40 degree temperature range, but the city still has multiple snow days a year.
What is the terrain like in Brooklyn Hill?
Raleigh’s terrain is fairly mild for the most part with only a few hills and steep inclines to be found within the boundaries of the city. More specifically, the Brooklyn Hill area only has a small increase in elevation. Starting from its southern border on Peace Street, you will find the terrain to be gradually sloping upward until you reach the northern border of the neighborhood on Deveraux Street.
Foot and street traffic are likely to be relatively heavy in this section of Raleigh. Peace Street is almost always busy with city traffic and Brooklyn Hill borders the greater Glenwood area which is mostly residential and full of people walking dogs and jogging. These qualities will be most intense around regular rush hour times, but if you stick to the more residential sections of the neighborhood, you should be able to avoid most of the congestion on your daily outing.
How many greenways are there in Brooklyn Hill?
There are no parks or greenways within the boundaries of Brooklyn Hill, but there are several options within a short walking distance to the north and west. Fred Fletcher Park, just a few blocks to the north, is one of Raleigh’s most famous parks. It stretches for 21 acres and has tons of open green space as well as walking paths, athletic fields, and a beautiful amphitheater that is built into the landscape of the park. It is a popular place for casual park-goers as well as organizations who host formal events.
To the west of Brooklyn Hill, there is Edna Metz Wells Park which is located right next to the Cameron Village Shopping Center. The park itself is only 3 acres and is much less formal than Fletcher Park, mostly used for its creek and small walking trails. There are several satellite parks like this within fairly easy walking distance of Brooklyn Hill.
