The humid subtropical climate can make summertime pedestrian travel difficult because high temperatures and humidity occur frequently. Winters can be damp and cold with sleet and snow occasionally occurring. Whatever the weather in this region, be prepared with appropriate dress and avoid inclement weather that may be too hot or too cold to be comfortable for walking with your dog.
Sidewalks and grass berms are safer for walking and provide soft footing for your pooch's paws. The residential neighborhood's tree canopy provides an excellent, cool place to walk with your dog and avoid summertime heat. The terrain is mostly flat in the region and there are no steep hills to contend with, so pedestrians and pooches of all ability levels can navigate the neighborhoods of Merchantville relatively easily.
There are two dedicated dog parks in the region. The Merchantville Bow Wow Dog Park and Cooper River Dog Park have separate areas for large and small dogs to play off-leash. The Cooper River Park is located along the Cooper River Lake in Cherry Hill. This park has sports fields and facilities, boat launches, fishing, wetlands and natural areas, trails where dogs are allowed throughout the park on a leash, and also the off-leash dog park. The Cooper River Dog Park area has water fountains, seating areas, and even lights so residents can use the park after dark.
The Merchantville Cycling Path provides a contiguous greenway running east-west the region. Walk your dog along the green spaces adjacent to the cycling path or teach your pooch to run alongside your bike to traverse the neighborhoods. Numerous smaller parks are dotted through this area and there is usually a green space within easy walking distance for most residents.
