Wag! Walkers know Historic Downtown
The Historic Downtown area of Jersey City is a broad community consisting of three sub-neighborhoods and is named for the historic architecture that is a part of this area's landscape. It runs the length of the downtown area on the west side bordering Interstate 78. In addition to the scenery, Historic Downtown also has a retail area and dog-friendly Jersey City has plenty of places to get all of the latest supplies, a trim, and, of course, medical care for your favorite pup.
Jersey weather has its extremes in the winter and summer. The area is vulnerable to the Nor’easters that rampage through the area and hot humid days are just a part of the summers here. While you surely won’t be able to walk every day of the year, you will find that there will be a dry spot on most days where walking is possible from spring to fall.
What is the terrain like in Historic Downtown?
Jersey City sits in the flats on the coast, so you should not expect to find any hills during your walks through the Historic Downtown area. You might encounter some very small elevation changes on the western boundary of the neighborhood, but nothing that you will notice. If you are looking for some challenge in your walking routine, you will need to turn to other methods to achieve it. On the other hand, with two different parks with dog runs available, getting some exercise for your pup shouldn’t be hard. Sidewalks are the ideal mode of transportation for walkers and their dogs here. A few areas do have some dirt or grassy patches here and there and there are a lot of old trees lining many of the streets. However, none of these will be enough to change the fact that any city walks you do will be on concrete.
How many greenways are there in Historic Downtown?
Four parks are available in Historic Downtown. The two of biggest note to dog walkers is Hamilton Park to the north and Van Vorst Park at the southern edge of the neighborhood. What makes these parks special besides their size is that each of them has off-leash dog parks where your pup can really burn off some energy running with their friends or playing a high-flying game of fetch with you.
There is a greenway at Mary Benson Park that is mostly ball field, but it provides a place to get off the hot concrete for a bit if you happen to be near there. Jones Park is a small park just north of there that could also be used as a stopping place on your walk. To the south is City Hall Park which is only a patch of grass, but benches and trees make it a nice place to take a break.
