The climate in Jersey City is warmer than inland New York State due to its coastal location, however, precipitation is also typical. Snow and cold temperatures do occur in winter and pedestrians will need to dress for the cold weather when traveling on foot. Summers usually have plenty of sunshine, although rain and high humidity are also factors in summer.
Elevated train tracks and the Holland Tunnel Toll Plaza, a route to nearby Manhattan, are situated in Newport so noise and traffic can be an issue for pedestrians and pets in the area. Residential areas and parks with greenways on the east side of the neighborhood along the river are more hospitable for walking your dog on a more comfortable terrain. High rise apartments and a hotel along the shore offer views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. Overall, the terrain is flat in Newport with walkable sidewalks so pedestrians should not have any difficulty on walks as you'll avoid any steep hills.
Newport Green Park, located in the northeast corner of Newport, is an award-winning park. This park has a 7500-square-foot urban sandy beach where concerts, festivals, and film screenings take place. A water park and carousel are additional unique features of the park. For pet owners, the area features plenty of paved walking paths, open lawns, and trees which are great for walking your tail-wagger. The park is also connected to the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway which provides 20 km of green space along the Hudson River, enough for even the most energetic hound!
If you are wanting some freedom for your pup to play off-leash, the Vyv Dog Park is located just south of the community and features two fenced off-leash areas. One is provided for small breeds and another for larger dogs to romp!
Other Newport greenways, recreation areas, and parks include Newport Gazebo Park, Marina Park, Pier A Park, and Gateway Park.
