West Slope is a neighborhood located inland where the New Jersey Palisades declines. This neighborhood is mostly residential with commercial businesses and services located along John Fitzgerald Kennedy Boulevard which runs through the district. This main thoroughfare has many services such as grocers, convenience stores, and restaurants that local West Slope residents can access on foot. There are even a couple of pet stores and veterinarians in the area providing services to pet owners and their canine companions.

Residents that like to walk the area will experience a variety of weather in Jersey City. While spring and fall are pleasant, summers can be hot and humid and winters can be cold and wet in this coastal city. If you plan on traveling on foot be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and don't forget your pup may not like inclement weather either!  Plan outdoor excursions for times of the day when the weather will be less of a factor.

The Western Slope is situated on an incline down from the Palisades along the Hudson River. If you walk west, you will need to hike up a relatively long incline to go back east again, so take this into consideration on walks with your pup and plan your route according to you and your dog’s ability.

This neighborhood is a well developed, historic residential area with densely packed homes. Residential properties tend to have little landscaping up front but many buildings in the area are historic character homes. There are walk-up apartments, single-family homes, and duplexes, as well as some commercial businesses along main thoroughfares that are generally located in more modern buildings. Sidewalks are located against roadways with no grassy berms, so keep your dog leashed to avoid having your pooch accidentally step out into traffic. To the west, there is a busy thoroughfare, Tonnele Avenue, and a large industrial area. This area is not pedestrian-friendly.

Washington Park is a 22-acre park and recreation area. This historic 100-year-old park has lots of green space and pedestrian pathways to enjoy with your dog and plenty of recreational activity to watch as you stroll. Basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and a football field are all located here. There are seating and gardens to enjoy, and best of all, an enclosed dog run where your pup can romp with other dogs off-leash.

Just south, another beautiful park, Leonard Gordon Park, is the site of a large 100-year-old sculpture called 'Buffalo and Bears' and has open lawns, trees, and paved pedestrian pathways. You can saunter through this park, take a seat in the shade, and enjoy the green space on a hot summer afternoon. Several other dog parks, recreation areas, and greenways are located along the Hudson River to the east. These areas may require a drive to access.
