Wag! Walkers know Downtown Nutley (Downtown)
Nutley is a small township on the Passaic River in New Jersey and just north of New York. The downtown area runs along the Third River and is centered on Franklin Blvd. While this neighborhood is primarily commercial, there is also a residential space in apartments along the boulevard and on the outskirts of the downtown area. The area has a wide range of dining available as well as grocery stores and corner markets. Grooming and vet services are a short walk away in Downtown Nutley, but you will have to hop in the car to make it to the next pet store.
Weather in Nutley is snowy in the winter which might make a few days inhospitable for walking. Summer is quite warm, but of bigger concern is the humidity which can make walking miserable for both you and your pup. Early morning walks can solve that problem since it generally cools off nicely overnight.
What is the terrain like in Downtown Nutley (Downtown)?
As you walk down the main road of Downtown Nutley, the terrain is fairly level, but the downtown runs along the base of the ridge and the moment you head west, you are instantly going uphill. To the east, the terrain stays fairly level until you get past the river. The hills make for some good walking if your goal is to get in better shape. A bit of mix and match between hills and more level ground can make a great interval training as well which can greatly benefit high-energy dogs.
Sidewalks and grassy shoulders are available on most of the roads around downtown. The only exception is the main road which has a sidewalk but no shoulders with grass. This should not be a problem, provided it is not too hot outside. Remember that sidewalks that are too hot for your bare feet will be too hot for your pup's as well.
How many greenways are there in Downtown Nutley (Downtown)?
The Third River Greenway runs the length of Downtown Nutley and has a trail that runs alongside it. This is a great alternative to walking around town because even though the path is paved, your pup can get off the concrete and walk on the grass.
Along the river are also four parks. The southernmost park, Booth Park, has large fields of grass, big shade trees, and benches. Yanticaw Park was built 1911 and is a much larger park. It is full of trees, walking paths, and a playground. Memorial Park lies close to the center of Downtown Nutley and is only a block or two off of the main road. A pond, grass, and pathways make this a nice place to escape the summer heat. The last park on the river is Kingsland Park which is 10 acres, has large fields, and includes a very scenic walk along the river that should not be missed.
