Wag! Walkers know Old Bridge Crossroads (Downtown)
The crossroads of Old Bridge is a downtown commercial area surrounded by residential areas. Originally the site of the Lenni Lenape Native Americans and then farmland, today, the area is part of the larger township of Old Bridge which has been named one of the best places to live in the U.S. The highway cutting through town makes the businesses not very accessible on foot, but there is access to food and groceries along the major downtown route. The closest pet stores are south of downtown so you will need a car to access them. Grooming is nearby and you won’t have to drive too far for a vet.
The climate in Old Bridge is cold in the winter with average lows in the low 20s and approximately 25 inches of snow each year. Summers are in the mid-80s, but the humidity here is not as bad as some areas, so enjoy walking from spring through fall.
What is the terrain like in Old Bridge Crossroads (Downtown)?
The terrain is mainly flat with very minor elevation changes that will not slow anyone down. Feel free to enjoy a slow, leisurely walk through the neighborhood surrounding downtown Old Bridge town. The main road is not really made for walking and has no shoulders or sidewalks. Crossing from one side of the highway to the other is only possible in a couple of places, so plan for your walks to explore the residential areas on either side.
Sidewalks and grassy shoulders are common and make it possible to walk your dog even when it is a bit warm. Keep your dog in the grass to protect their feet from hot concrete. Some of the roads run along greenways and have no shoulder and these are probably not the best places to walk because of visibility issues. If you must walk them, make sure to stay on the side of the road with the largest shoulder.
How many greenways are there in Old Bridge Crossroads (Downtown)?
Old Bridge actually has a lot of greenways surrounding the town, but many of them are not accessible. There are not a lot of public parks in the area either, so if you cannot find any greenways to take your dog into, then your other alternative is to hop in the car and head to one of the parks in the neighboring townships.
There is one park in Old Bridge Township called Mannino Park that also has a dog park called the Bark Park. It is a well maintained, fenced in area where you can let your pup off-leash.
If you are feeling adventurous, head north on Highway 9 and head east to Cheesequake State Park. There is a whopping 1600 acres to explore and plenty of trails and hills to challenge you. Your pup will get their fill of grass and trees and you will enjoy getting out of the city for the day.
