The downtown area of Ridgefield Park centers on Main Street and extends out into the residential areas surrounding it. The small town feel makes walking up and down Main Street a special treat. Many of the buildings have apartments in them, allowing residents to live right where they have convenient access to everything. You will find grocery stores, restaurants, and corner stores selling just about everything you might want or need. A vet is available right there in downtown Ridgefield and essentials for your pet can be found easily. Otherwise, a wider selection can be found in nearby Hasbrouck Heights.

The climate in Ridgefield Park is cold in the winter with an average of 26 inches a snow per year. Ridgefield has some gentle hills that are ideal for every fitness level. Not everyone wants a workout when they take their furry companion out for a walk. In some cases, a stroll down Main Street to do a bit of window shopping is just what the doctor ordered. If this describes you, then you will love the clean sidewalks along the downtown corridor. If you hope to use your walks to exercise, it's time to be a bit more adventurous and take advantage of the hills in the neighborhood. Head out of the main downtown area and explore some of the residential spaces of the community.

As you leave Main Street, a lot of the sidewalks have trees for shade and grass for your pup to explore. The more time you spend exploring, the easier it will be to choose routes that offer the most greenery and shade for summer time walking.

The closest greenway is across the NJ Turnpike at Overpeck Park. Not only is it a fair distance from downtown Ridgefield, but you must take Emerson St. to the south to get over the turnpike and then head back up north to the park. This park is a great destination because once you get out of your car, there are walking paths heading north and eventually over the creek. On the other side, there is a sizeable dog park that allows you to let Fido off the leash and let them have a really good run. There are over 805 acres and 5 miles of hiking trails you and your pup can use.

Farther up northwest of Ridgefield, there are three smaller parks along the Hackensack River including Oscar E. Oslen Park, Foschini Park, and Terhune Park. Each have fields and walking paths and make a nice change of pace and scenery from walking in neighborhoods.
