Described by some as both urban and upscale, a trip through Huning Highland has much of the old along with the new modern architecture. Newly renovated Victorian homes sit side by side with modern Pueblo designed buildings and more modern 20th-century homes. While the neighborhood is primarily residential, you will find that there are a number of retail businesses. In addition, Huning Highland is just outside of downtown Albuquerque so you are just a short jaunt away from all of the services and amenities you could want. You will find restaurants and markets sprinkled throughout the neighborhood with far more to the immediate west. Pet stores and veterinarians are few and far between in this area and you will need to hop in the car to get your pup’s essentials. Despite this, a cold semi-arid climate means low humidity and temperatures that only rarely get really cold or really hot so you'll have plenty of good weather to enjoy!

Elevations do vary a bit in Huning Highland, providing a few easy hills throughout the neighborhood. Albuquerque is at a relatively high altitude, but elevations through the city vary given the area you live in. If you walk to the east, you will find some intense hills that would give a serious walker more of a challenge. However, if you head towards downtown, the terrain is much flatter. Walks are urban with sidewalks and no grass to speak of unless you find a greenway. Highland Park is situated on the east side and offers beautiful green grass, large shade trees, picnic tables and benches, and some pathways to walk on. Roosevelt Park is not in Huning Highland, but is a very large park just to the southeast and provides a large grassy area that is very nice for walking dogs in. A path goes around almost the entire park.
Finally, several blocks to the north, you will find Martineztown Park. This park is not much more than a very large wide-open field, but in an arid climate, the green grass and trees are a welcome respite for your furry companion.
