Wag! Walkers know East Amherst

East Amherst is a suburban and, in some areas, a rural hamlet between the towns of Clarence and Amherst, New York. There are decent walking opportunities within and amongst some of the many long-established neighborhoods and newer build developments. Many of these streets are quiet, shady, and populated by winding roads, courts, and dead ends. Newly developing areas might not have mature trees to provide the amount of cover that exists in older neighborhoods, so appropriate sun protection is necessary for you and the dog while walking in these areas. Most main arteries in East Amherst are older, more rural roads that don't feature sidewalks or many street lights. Walking on the sides of these roads is not recommended, but if you do, be sure you and the dog are wearing high-visibility, reflective gear.

While it lacks in some walking areas, East Amherst makes up for that loss in parks and walking trails. Nature parks abound, and the key canine feature in this area is the Paw Park located in the northeast corner of the town. Weather can vary depending on the season, and comfortable. Protective gear may be needed based on current conditions. Spring and fall are often pleasant but can be rainy. Summers tend to get hot quickly, and winters are usually snowy, cold, and windy. Check out the forecast and be sure that you and your dog are ready for whatever the weather brings.

What is the terrain like in East Amherst?

Most of East Amherst is situated on what was once farmland and wooded areas. As such, a good portion of the town is flat which allows for easy walking terrain. There are some slightly hilly areas in some locations, however, they are not difficult to walk or drive on. Walking a dog should be limited to the neighborhoods off of main arteries such as North French Road, Millersport Highway, Tonawanda Creek Road, New Road, and Transit Road. Driving to various parks to allow dogs extra enrichment is simple as the parks are within a ten-minute drive of each other and are not difficult to locate.

How many greenways are there in East Amherst?

The older neighborhoods provide quiet streets with sidewalks and shade for easy walking accessibility. The same cannot be said for developments that are currently being built so walk those areas with caution. East Amherst offers a short but pleasant boardwalk nature trail through Billy Wilson Park which has a variety of wildlife and some water features. Ample parking is also available, and dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash and cleaned up after. Two additional walking paths are located around the Glen Oak Golf Course and the University at Buffalo North Campus Bike Path. Dogs are allowed in these locations, but as other walkers, cyclists, and runners also use these areas, dogs should be leashed and under control at all times. Additionally, when the golf course is open, be on the lookout for errant golf balls coming your way.

The main canine attraction in East Amherst is the Paw Park, a popular dog park located off of Millersport Highway and Smith Road. The park has two fenced sections, one for larger dogs and one for smaller breeds. Both parts feature ample room to run, play, and chase after toys. Fresh water is always available as well as waste bags and trash cans for clean-up. As the Paw Park is relatively new, the trees are not mature enough yet to provide large amounts of shade. The park rules are clearly stated at the entrance, and all participants are expected to follow them. If your dog doesn't play well with others, the Paw Park might not be the best place for them.
