The Village of Brightwaters is a neighborhood within Bay Shores that is home to over 3,000 residents. It is an upper-middle-class residential area that is home to Wohseepee Park, the Brightwaters Canal, and four lakes! Nestled with Long Island, Brightwaters is close to the coast and subject to the climate of a northern coastal city. Temperatures can average from the 30s in the winter to 70s during the summer but are influenced by its proximity to the ocean, so be prepared for unpredictable changes from time to time.

Just down the road at 27A and Community sits AJ’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese Shop that welcomes our canine friends at their outdoor tables. Some dogs love cheese and it can be a small treat, but be sure to get a pup owner's permission before feeding them human food! The parks and green spaces in The Village of Brightwaters are all on-leash experiences but still provide plenty of room to run.

A relatively flat terrain covers the Village of Brightwaters. It is a good mix of artificial and natural turf. It is an established neighborhood that will find you and your canine friend going from concrete to grass frequently. Many of the roads in the village do not have sidewalks. Know your traffic laws and outfit both you and your four-legged companion with reflective gear.

The area is home to four smaller lakes and ends at the coast. The lakes are not posted as dog-friendly, so swimming would be discouraged. Walker Beach is at the end of the village on the coast with a typical beachfront area. Try to allow your dog to relieve themselves in the grassy areas before walking on the beach, but if an accident happens, be courteous and pick it up. Be aware that sand can get hot and burn paws quickly. If you can't walk barefoot, your pup can't either!

Green spaces abound in the Village of Brightwaters. Mature trees provide needed shade for longer walks. Open green spaces give a soft turf for switching off the concrete.

Wohseepee Park is located in the northern portion of this neighborhood. The park boasts a fitness trail, benches, picnic areas, and a tennis court. This is not an off-leash area but it still provides enough opportunities and amenities for you and your canine friend to enjoy together.

Gardiner County Park is also a large greenway in the neighborhood. Lots of walking trails, benches for resting, and open spaces for playing lead to the waterfront and a natural beach. The park is dog-friendly but as tempting as it is to let your dog off-leash, it is not allowed here. Enjoy this natural environment together and watch for small wildlife that can tempt certain breeds into a merry chase! Be watchful of marshy areas close to the waterfront.
