The weather in this part of New York is typical of a northern coastal climate. Winters are cool and wet, although the ocean moderates extremely cold temperatures. Snow can occur in the region but usually does not stay and a good, warm, water-resistant winter coat is usually adequate to allow winter walking. Summers can be hot and humid so take water along on walks for you and your dog to stay hydrated. Always be aware of forecasted weather systems coming in from the Atlantic to avoid severe weather.
Gerritsen Beach is located on a peninsula with a harbor and marinas along the southwest side. The Gotham Avenue Channel bisects the neighborhood east to west and Marine Park is located on the northeast side, providing a large green space. The area north of the canal has streets with stores, homes, and wide sidewalks ideal for pedestrian travel. The area south of the canal is the older section and is popular with fishing and recreational boaters.
The terrain is relatively flat with streets laid out a grid pattern and narrow roads are often one way. This neighborhood is considered a best-kept secret by residents who enjoy the seclusion offered by the location on the peninsula. Many residents and visitors enjoy fishing along the coastal terrain and visiting the beaches in the area. The Gerritsen Ballfields and athletic fields located here along with a mini airport for model airplanes all provide open green spaces in the region.
This park is a great location to take your dog as it has off-leash areas! While dogs must remain on leash on athletic and recreational grounds, playgrounds, and in natural preserves, other designated areas allow your pup to play off-leash. Make sure your pup has a good off-leash recall and is well socialized before taking advantage of off-leash areas.
