Wag! Walkers know Gravesend
You will be hard-pressed to find too many communities with more history than Gravesend, so if you are a history buff and love to look at old buildings, this community is perfect for you! Of course, walking your dog is just for exercise right? It is a good thing that you can walk with your pup and still spend time looking at all of the old historic buildings that reside here, some of which are between 250 to 350 years old.
There is lots to do and see here, especially with Coney Island just a couple of blocks south of the borders of Gravesend. There is a pet store, a vet, a groomer, and best of all, dog parks in close proximity. Weather here is typical of New York, but being at the mouth of the Lower Bay, this area also tends to get the brunt of storms coming up from the Southern Atlantic.
What is the terrain like in Gravesend?
Since you are essentially living on the flats here and this area is right at sea level, there are no elevations to disrupt your leisurely stroll. In fact, you will not find any hills anywhere close to Gravesend. The nearest elevation changes for those looking for some real exercise are up in Prospect Park a few miles to the north. For most people, however, this does not present a problem.
Most of the walking through these neighborhoods is pretty urban. While all the streets have sidewalks, you would be very hard-pressed to find any with grass and even though there are a few trees, that is about all of the greenery outside of private spaces that you can expect to see. Some of the streets to the east and north contain the nicer homes and there, you will find more trees and grass than in other parts of the neighborhood.
How many greenways are there in Gravesend?
Most of the greenways in the central part of Gravesend are playgrounds. Since playgrounds have little green to them and do not allow dogs, you are better off looking towards the perimeter of the neighborhood and just outside of it for adventures.
Calvert Vaux Park is one of your first and possible best opportunities and it exists on the bay just inside the bounds of Gravesend. Right out on the water, it is made from the remnants of constructing the Verazanno-Narrows Bridge. There are lots of places to walk, wildlife to watch, and beautiful green grass to lay in.
A few blocks south of Gravesend is the Coney Island Beach and Boardwalk. Kaiser Park is just across the water from Calvert Vaux Park and it has an off-leash area to let your dog have a good run. Finally, there is Marine Park just on the other side of Sheepshead Bay that has multiple trails and lots of areas to explore.
