Wag! Walkers know Vinegar Hill
Vinegar Hill is a little neighborhood in Brooklyn between the East River and Dumbo. This neighborhood historically had a large population of Irish-Americans and so it has colloquially been known as Irishtown. This neighborhood was named after the Battle of Vinegar Hill and was first settled by Dutch immigrants in the early seventeenth century who used it for farming. In modern times, the area was used for warehouses and commercial uses. Recently, since the 1970s, the area has been revitalized by a thriving art community.
The neighborhood is now considered historic. Luckily, there are several businesses catering to dogs at the borders of this community. Kiki’s Pet Spa and Boutique will have your pooch looking beautiful and relaxed. You can let your pup run off-leash with their friends at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Dog Run. There is another great dog park at the East River Esplanade South, so you have plenty of options!
What is the terrain like in Vinegar Hill?
Vinegar Hill is a small neighborhood that, despite its name, is actually quite flat. It is composed of a warehouse area along the coast and tall apartment buildings further inland. Walking along the city streets definitely feels like city walking with buildings that push up against sidewalks. There is little tree cover and no divider between sidewalk and road throughout most of Vinegar Hill.
Nearer the south perimeter of the neighborhood, there is more greenery in the form of taller trees and shrubs along the road. Just across the border, there are several blocks of planned apartment buildings that are surrounded by a generous green area and lots of trees. You will feel more comfortable walking your dog on a loose leash here.
Trinity Park is at the other side of this area and is a lovely place to stroll through the grassy areas with your dog on a loose leash.
How many greenways are there in Vinegar Hill?
There isn’t much green space within the tiny neighborhood of Vinegar Hill, but there are several nice little parks that aren’t too far. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Dog Run and East River Esplanade South Dog Park are both great places to let your pup play with her friends off leash.
Trinity Park is a lovely, large, grassy park for you and your dog to enjoy, located in the loops of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Nearer the coast, Main Street Park is a gorgeous place right on the water to enjoy.
Cadman Plaza Park is a very large, wooded park which you and your dog will love to explore on a loose leash. Whitman Park is connected to it and has a nice grassy area. The Hillside Dog park is located near here as well for more play off-leash and the Pier 1 Park is a nice place to go with your dog as well.
