The Buffalo River is a fantastic, entertaining walking experience for people and their dogs. This highly walkable area has seen a significant rebirth over the last five years with many new developments along the river and the inner and outer harbors. The waterfront view combined with easy access makes the river an ideal choice for a beautiful walk with your dog.

Because the Buffalo River flows into Lake Erie, it's important to note that the weather can change significantly along the water. Even on hot and humid days, it's best to be prepared for the cool breeze off the river and have a jacket handy. Springtime can still be cold and windy, so dress appropriately if you and your dog are walking during this season. Because of its proximity to Lake Erie, the Buffalo River can be challenging to walk along during winter. Lake-effect snowstorms and bitterly cold temperatures are prevalent along the river in the wintertime.

Pathways are established along with markers highlighting many of the paths and monuments along the water. There are many sightseeing opportunities including watching the boats sailing up and down the river, enjoying the variety of unique architecture, and relaxing at Canalside while people watching. On a hot, sunny day, the Buffalo River is a perfect place to walk your dog and enjoy the breeze off the water. There are also a variety of cafes and eateries along the river that are accessible and provide refreshment for you and your dog. Just be aware of local traffic and be courteous to other pedestrians.

There are greenways all along the Buffalo River, although there are a few standouts for dog walkers. The Erie Basin Marina, its trail, and the accompanying trail gardens are a great place to walk with your dog. The path goes all the way down to the lakeside lighthouse and runs directly alongside the water.

Not too far from the marina is The Barkyard, a dog park inside of Lasalle Park. The dog park is 70,000 acres of off-leash fun for dogs. Two fenced-in areas offer separate sections for large and small dogs. Fresh water, seating, and handicap access are available at all times at The Barkyard. Additionally, Wilkeson Pointe in the river's Outer Harbor is a dog-friendly, relaxing place to walk or stop for a break. The nature path at Wilkeson Pointe is highly recommended by local dog owners as are the amazing sunsets you and your dog can watch at the end of a long day.
