Wag! Walkers know North Buffalo

North Buffalo lies along the northernmost border of nearby Kenmore with the famous Delaware Park marking the southernmost tip of this part of the city. Known for its Italian heritage, North Buffalo is a mixture of single-family and double flat apartments, small businesses, eclectic shops, and community parks. It is a highly walkable section of Buffalo and is popular especially during the summer when various festivals are held in the area.

As weather conditions vary in Buffalo based on the season, you will need to be prepared for a wide range of precipitation and temperatures. Spring is often cold and rainy while summer and fall are ideal times to walk in North Buffalo. Heat and humidity can make walks difficult at times in the summer, so dress appropriately and make sure it is never too hot. Winters are often the hardest time to walk due to the snow and icy conditions. It is reccommended that you dress warmly.

What is the terrain like in North Buffalo?

The terrain in North Buffalo is mostly flat with some minor exceptions around and near the southernmost point where it can be gradually hilly. Streets feature older family homes with a few smaller apartment complexes. The main strip of North Buffalo is Hertel Avenue, a primary road lined with stores and restaurants. The wide sidewalks make this a perfect place to walk a dog.

Even better, many restaurants and stores on Hertel allow dogs, have dog-designated eating areas or offer canine specialties on the menu. If you want to grab a bite to eat, check out New Jewel of India or Lloyd's Taco on Hertel, both of which offer seating on their patios for dogs. If you are looking for a refreshing treat, try White Rabbit Frozen Yogurt near the corner of Hertel and Delaware Avenue. Dogs are not allowed in the shop, but they do sell a tasty doggie frozen yogurt treat if your pup needs a snack.

How many greenways are there in North Buffalo?

Despite its dense population, North Buffalo features two parks, both large and small, that allow leashed dogs. The small park, Shoshone Park, lies at the east end of North Buffalo. Shoshone has enough space to walk a dog plus it is connected to the North Buffalo Rails to Trails walking path.

Delaware Park is a large park located at the southernmost part of North Buffalo. Renowned because of its famous designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, Delaware Park is a centerpiece of Buffalo. As an incredibly serene park with lakes and pathways, Delaware Park is 350 acres of room to explore. Dogs are welcome virtually anywhere in the park except the sports fields, however, they must be leashed. As one of the most popular locations in Buffalo, Delaware Park is frequented by many walkers, runners, athletes, families, and dog walkers. Always keep your dog on a leash and be prepared to encounter other people and dogs while visiting.
