Wag! Walkers know North East

The northeast section of Buffalo, New York is populated by older neighborhoods, closely-knit communities, and many walkable opportunities for walkers and dogs. The majority of North East Buffalo is filled with homes of various styles on tree-lined streets with easily accessible sidewalks. Some areas, especially along busy Main Street, also have retail and commercial businesses and are dominated by heavy traffic during the morning and evening rush hours. North East Buffalo provides a few nearby parks for dogs to stretch their legs and experience some enrichment.

North East Buffalo receives its fair share of snow in the winter. Walking or driving in this part of the city during snowy conditions must be done with caution. Spring is often a mix of cold and temperate weather and can be particularly rainy. Summer and fall are the best times of year to be outside in North East Buffalo, although hot and humid conditions are not unheard of.

What is the terrain like in North East?

Most of North East Buffalo, both the residential and commercial areas, is flat with terrain dominated by sidewalks and asphalt. There are some green space areas in designated parks, but otherwise, you will be walking on these surfaces exclusively. Care should be taken walking on sidewalks that are worn or broken and when crossing streets. Be vigilant to the many cars pulling in and out of driveways and parking lots when walking on significant roads like Main Street.

As this is a densely populated area of the city, you and your dog will likely encounter many other people and pets on the street. Be sure to have your dog on a leash at all times and be prepared to have the dog under control in the presence of other dogs. Interactions of this kind are bound to happen frequently in this small area, so keep yourself and your dog safe by staying alert and aware of your surroundings.

How many greenways are there in North East?

Green spaces are incorporated within these city neighborhoods. The smallest of the three prime green spaces in North East Buffalo is Minnesota Linear Park on Kenmore Avenue. It is a slim, grassy park encompassed by surrounding homes with older, full grown trees and lots of shade to rest under.

Shoshone Park on Main Street and Hertel Avenue is a favorite neighborhood spot for walkers and families. The park is medium-sized and has direct access to the North Buffalo Rails to Trails walking path that leads to the nearby town of Tonawanda. McCarthy Park, between Main Street and East Amherst Street, is home to multiple baseball fields for sports enthusiasts. The park features a walking path and plenty of green space, however, trees and shade are a rarity so have your sun gear ready and watch your dog for overheating and hot paws if you walk there on a hot day.
