Because South Buffalo lies directly on Lake Erie, it is susceptible to heavy lake effect snowfall during the winter. Walking or driving can be dangerous during these times, and walkers should wear warm, comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for snowy and icy conditions. Spring, summer, and fall can be cool right on the lake, but pleasant enough for walking.
Most of the residential areas in South Buffalo are excellent settings for a quiet, peaceful walk with your dog. However, those neighborhoods and commercial districts located along busier roadways require more precaution on a dog walker's part. Always keep your dog on a leash, use designated crosswalks when crossing streets, and be mindful of the high volume of traffic during morning and evening rush hours. Additionally, many cars pull in and out of driveways and parking lots along these busy areas, so be on alert while walking your dog.
Along Lake Erie, parks such as Buffalo Harbor State Park offer hiking trails, beaches, picnic areas, and a beautiful view of the boats on the lake. Wilkenson Pointe is a family-friendly park and a perfect location. If your dog is a fan of water, then access to the beach will keep them entertained.
