South Buffalo comprises nearly a third of the city of Buffalo, New York. Home to a strong Irish-American community, South Buffalo has long been the center of the industrial and steel industries in Western New York. The town of West Seneca borders South Buffalo to the east, Lake Erie to the west, and the city of Lackawanna to the south. Vast sections of South Buffalo are still industrial, but far more areas are residential with older, tree-lined streets in quiet neighborhoods. Many of these neighborhoods are located in close-knit communities with well-kept properties.

Because South Buffalo lies directly on Lake Erie, it is susceptible to heavy lake effect snowfall during the winter. Walking or driving can be dangerous during these times, and walkers should wear warm, comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for snowy and icy conditions. Spring, summer, and fall can be cool right on the lake, but pleasant enough for walking.

The terrain in South Buffalo is a balance of residential, industrial, and green spaces. Some areas are flat, but hilly sections and the many overpasses and bridges in the area provide some steeper climbs in this region. Sidewalks are found in all residential neighborhoods and along major roadways and thoroughfares such as South Park Avenue, Louisiana Street, and Ohio Street.

Most of the residential areas in South Buffalo are excellent settings for a quiet, peaceful walk with your dog. However, those neighborhoods and commercial districts located along busier roadways require more precaution on a dog walker's part. Always keep your dog on a leash, use designated crosswalks when crossing streets, and be mindful of the high volume of traffic during morning and evening rush hours. Additionally, many cars pull in and out of driveways and parking lots along these busy areas, so be on alert while walking your dog.

If you are looking for some waterfront areas to walk on, check out Red Jacket River Front Park, Mutual River Front Park, and Conway Park, which are all located along the Buffalo River.

Along Lake Erie, parks such as Buffalo Harbor State Park offer hiking trails, beaches, picnic areas, and a beautiful view of the boats on the lake. Wilkenson Pointe is a family-friendly park and a perfect location. If your dog is a fan of water, then access to the beach will keep them entertained.
