Wag! Walkers know Canandaigua City Center

The city center of Canandaigua can be found within Ontario County, New York. Situated along the northern point of Canandaigua Lake, the neighborhood's roots can be traced back to its founding as a Seneca village. Modern Canandaigua provides multiple walking opportunities along its north and south main streets and in many of the small parks that are offshoots of it. This unique, picturesque city is a beautiful place to walk a dog.

From late June to early September, Canandaigua comes alive with tourists and summer vacationers intent on enjoying the beautiful weather. Temperatures during these months are relatively moderate, ranging from 72 to 82 degrees. Winters tell a different story. Cold conditions usher in freezing temperatures and overcast skies. Some snowfall may occur, but generally only a few inches. Walking and driving can still be tricky during this time, so take precautions and be sure that you and your dog are adequately outfitted to withstand the cold temperatures.

What is the terrain like in Canandaigua City Center?

The city center is focused around the north and south main streets and is typically flat and lined with various retails shops, small businesses, and restaurants. The flat terrain makes it an ideal place to walk an elderly dog or a pup with significant joint issues, so you may want to plan your route ahead of time to ensure that you don't venture anywhere a little more challenging. Although this area is highly walkable, be aware of oncoming traffic passing in and out of parking lots along the way as this can present a bit of a hazard, especially during busier times of the day. Some neighborhoods beyond the city center see some shifts in height with more prominent hills and valleys. Keep an eye on where you are walking so that you don't get caught off guard and find yourself stuck with an exhausted dog on your hands!

How many greenways are there in Canandaigua City Center?

Just off the main roads are a series of small parks that provide a delightful break in a walk or new enrichment for your dog. Atwater Park and Ontario County Park are kitty-corner to each other, tiny, and immersed within their respective residential neighborhoods. Seating and shade from large, established trees are available in both locations.

Gibson Park is another example of these small, accessible parks that hide in plain sight. A bit further off the main strip is Frank Baker park featuring tree-lined, shady areas, and natural paths. On the other side of the main streets is Sonnenburg Park which has multiple nature trails, shelters, and restrooms. Towards the lake, you can walk your dog in Kershaw Park with access to the beach and picnic areas, or take a stroll on the Canandaigua City Pier for some relaxation, nature, people-watching, and sun. Dogs must be on a leash at all times in these locations.
