Wag! Walkers know Jamaica
Jamaica is a lovely neighborhood situated within one of the five main boroughs of New York City, Queens. To the north and just above the major thoroughfare that is Hillside Avenue, you’ll find the neighborhood known as Jamaica Plains. If you head eastwards from Jamaica and across the Van Wyck Expressway, you’ll reach South Richmond Hill. If you travel west, you’ll reach Hollis. Just south of Jamaica is Linden Boulevard which marks the boundary between the area and its neighbor, South Jamaica.
There are a number of options if you’re looking for pet services in the area. On the border of St. Albans, South Jamaica, and Jamaica itself, you’ll find the Merrick Boulevard Animal Hospital. There are a few Petland Discounts also located nearby if you’re in the market for chain store supplies. You’ll find one on Jamaica Avenue and one on Hillside Avenue. For more options, head to Best Pet Supplies on Dunkirk Street.
What is the terrain like in Jamaica?
Jamaica is mostly flat. In fact, there isn’t much variation within the elevation throughout the neighborhood. However, there is a slight gradient if you are walking from the south of the area to the north. Where the inclines really start to pick up is the border of Jamaica Plains. This neighboring community is built on a much higher elevation than its similarly named friend. So, if you want to avoid the hills, stick to the south of the area.
While its name suggests tropical island beaches and coconut tree plantations, Jamaica, Queens is nothing like this. While the neighborhood is pleasant, its terrain is entirely artificial, just like most inner-city locales. What this means for your walk is that no special attire is required. You can literally wander around in your sandals. However, if you’re looking for something a little more exciting than an asphalt sidewalk, you’ll need to head towards a park or greenway.
How many greenways are there in Jamaica?
Jamaica has a couple of small greenways within its boundaries. Detective Keith L. Williams Park is located centrally, just off Liberty Avenue. This is a medium-sized city park that houses a few sports courts, a playground, and a running track. If you’re situated locally, it’s the perfect spot to bring your pooch.
In the south east of Jamaica, you’ll find Roy Wilkins Park. This is a great spot in the summer months and there are regular concerts and events that take place here. It has plenty of wide-open green space which is ideal for games of fetch and a good old run-around!
If you head further south from the neighborhood, you’ll find the slightly larger Baisley Pond Park. This stunning greenway features a large pond at its center and is, therefore, home to a wealth of wildlife. Your pooch won’t be the only animal nearby and they’ll love the sights, sounds, and smells this brings!
