Wag! Walkers know Canalside

Canalside in Lockport, New York is an easily accessible and highly walkable area. Designated, flat paths are located along the historic Erie Canal and the Flight of Five lock systems for which Lockport is so famous. Most areas along the Canalside path are lined with shady, established trees, shelters, parks, and plenty of sights to see on the water. Take a moment while walking your dog to wave to the visitors on the tour boats that operate up and down the Erie Canal every day.

Because Lockport is closer to Lake Ontario than Lake Erie, it is not as susceptible to blizzards and heavy snowfall as other parts of Western New York, however, winters are snowy and can be particularly windy, making the temperatures feel much colder. Springtime is often rainy and chilly, but summer and fall are ideal times to walk in this area. Exercise caution when walking in the heat of the day during summer.聽

What is the terrain like in Canalside?

The Canalside path is set off from the main roadways, making it a safe location to walk. The path is mainly flat with a few small inclines and some hilly sections near the bridges that span across the Erie Canal. Shade is available courtesy of trees along the path and in the parks聽where the path passes through. It is easy to walk along the path if you are located nearby, but parking is available for drivers. The surrounding area is a mixture of older residential homes and commercial businesses.

Be aware that some parts of the path come close to the canal itself. If you are walking a dog who is fond of water, don't let them wander too close to the waterway. Although the canal is not overly deep, it is difficult to get out of if you fall into it. Some spots along the path are worn or feature stone gravel rather than pavement.聽

How many greenways are there in Canalside?

The canalside path itself runs alongside greenways and through a few small but beautiful parks. The path originates at Wide Waters Marina and runs alongside the Erie Canal through Nelson C. Goehle Municipal Park. Goehle Park offers shady spots, shelters, and benches to stop for a break or to watch the boats as they sail down the Canal.聽

If you are on the other side of the Canal, you can visit the small but woodsy Upson Park near Eighteen Mile Creek and pick up the Erie Canal Heritage Trailway from that point straight into the city of Lockport. The trail聽continues through the city and connects with the biking paths in neighboring Niagara County towns.聽

While in Lockport, if you and your dog want a quick detour off the canal, just a few blocks away on East Street is the dog-friendly Scripts Cafe. Seating is available on the outside patio in the summer for patrons with dogs.聽
