Wag! Walkers know Belmont
It is hard to believe that this well-developed neighborhood was once all tobacco farmland. The land was originally owned by the wealthy tobacco farming Lorillard family. Once the Lorillards moved their tobacco farming enterprise to Lower Manhattan at the close of the 18th century, the family purchased more land, which they called "Belmont Estates". When the family moved to New Jersey in 1870, NYC purchased a large portion of their land for Bronx Park, the remaining land would become what is now known as Belmont. Another interesting fact for you movie buffs... the movie "A Bronx Tale", starring Robert DeNiro, was based on this neighborhood.
Bring your pup to Belmont and explore this historic and proud neighborhood. Be sure your dog is leashed and you clean up after them. Belmont loves a responsible dog parent!
What is the terrain like in Belmont?
Belmont is a blue collar working class community and it is made up of mostly businesses, 5 and 6 story apartment buildings, row houses, markets and many famous destinations like the Bronx Zoo, Fordham University, and New York Botanical Garden. The terrain is mostly low and flat. Most of the buildings that exist are pre-war and share either Art Deco or Tudor style architecture. The newly constructed row houses have attracted many new homeowners into the city where before there were only rental properties available. Many of the residents are Fordham University students staying in off-campus housing. The citizens of Belmont use public transportation like bus lines, the railroad and the subway to travel in and out of the city.
How many greenways are there in Belmont?
Let's go exploring, Fido and Fifi! Head on out to 183rd Avenue and explore the D'Auria Murphy Triangle Park. Be sure to check out the Christopher Columbus monument inside the park as well as many areas to rest, play and just slow down for a little while with your bestest buddy! Doggos must be leashed and under their person's control while inside the park for their own safety and the safety of any curious little kids (or adults) that want to pet your dog while your back is turned or other dogs that may be sniffing a bit too close for comfort near your pup. Take a stroll along its many trails or picnic at one of the area's many designated picnic areas. Be sure to keep your camera ready in case you cross paths with some wildlife or waterfowl! Enjoy your day in Belmont with your pup!
