Wag! Walkers know Bensonhurst
Bensonhurst is a large, square neighborhood in the southwestern area of Brooklyn. It is only four blocks from the water of Gravesend Bay, where you can enjoy a lovely walking trail along the water that is separated from the highway by a wide divider. There are also several regional parks within Bensonhurst, including Milestone Park and the Seth Low Playground.
Walking through Bensonhurst is pleasant, with attractive, often historic single-family brick homes and tall, mature trees. Homes are set quite close to the road for the most part, with only stoops or small yards between house and road. Sidewalks tend to be wide but do not have a divider between road and sidewalk in many areas. For these reasons this is not the best neighborhood to bicycle, skateboard, or rollerblade with your dog. You may get tired of walking your dog on such a close leash, and head for one of the local parks or the coast.
What is the terrain like in Bensonhurst?
This large neighborhood is generally composed of relatively closely spaced homes or apartment building that do not leave much room for walking your dog on the city streets. While sidewalks are wide, vehicle and pedestrian traffic are both busy, and there is little space for you to avoid people or cars in this busy area. While a well-behaved dog will have no trouble walking through the streets of Bensonhurst on a close leash, to give your dog a little more space you can head towards the coast and the lovely walking paths provided for you there. There is also a little park on the coast called Bensonhurst Park which is primarily composed of ballfields but which also provides nice walking paths through forested patches.
While you should not go on Dyker golf course with your dog, the sidewalk that runs along it for its entire length is a wonderful place to let your dog walk on a looser leash or get an opportunity to enjoy being on wheels with your dog.
How many greenways are there in Bensonhurst?
The densely populated neighborhood of Bensonhurst does not have too much to offer in terms of green space, but there are several opportunities for you to get away from the city walking. If you head several blocks to the coast, you can enjoy a grassy walk along the water for a significant distance. You can also find little parks here like Bath Beach park and Bensonhurst Park to enjoy with your dog. After all of the city walking with your dog, the opportunity to stretch your legs on the walkway bordering the water will be a relief for both of you. For another green space that is not technically park but gives you a chance to enjoy some greenery, you can walk along the golf course and the wide grassy space provided by the sidewalk there.
Several little Regional Parks including Milestone Park and a couple of playgrounds can also provide you some relief without leaving Bensonhurst. Milestone Park is densely wooded although small so you will get an opportunity to enjoy some natural tree cover with your dog.
