Wag! Walkers know Bergen Beach

Bergen Beach is located on the southeastern edge of Brooklyn, New York. This neighborhood is surrounded by water on three sides; it was once an island until it was connected by landfill in 1918. The Belt Parkway runs through the southern tip of Bergen Beach and the Jamaica Bay Riding Academy is located here.

This neighborhood is residential and has a very suburban feel, in spite of its Brooklyn location and easy accessibility to the city. On the northern edge of Bergen Beach is the sub-neighborhood of Georgetown, which has a shopping area and several services including nearby pet supply stores and veterinary services for pet owners. Residents on the northern section of Bergen Beach can access these services on foot. Parks and greenspaces on the east and south of the community can also be accessed on foot by locals.

Walking in New York is weather dependent and although Brooklyn weather is more temperate than in other parts of the state due to its coastal location, weather can be cool and rainy or stormy in the winter, due to Atlantic weather systems. Summer is often hot and humid on many days, and walking may require lots of water packed along for you and your pooch.

What is the terrain like in Bergen Beach?

Bergen Beach is mostly flat and at sea level with some higher elevations and uplands. This area was once an island that was later attached to Brooklyn with a landfill and a bulkhead that was built connecting to Mill Basin, which eventually formed the basis for the Belt Parkway along the southern edge of the community. There is a problem with unstable landfill sinking, and some homes in the area have experienced this problem, especially when flooding occurs in low areas.

The area is full of very different homes with unique architecture. There are connected duplexes, row houses, and apartment blocks as well as both moderate and very large single-family homes. Many homes have large yards for the families in the area to enjoy and feature pools, play equipment, or trampolines. The area has mature landscaping and large trees lining sidewalks that provide a shaded, safe, walking area for residents and their dogs.

There is a commercial area, Georgetown, in the north, Jamaica Bay bordering Bergen Beach to the southeast, Little Mill Basin waterway to the southwest and Paerdegat Basin located to the northeast, surrounding the neighborhood with water on three sides. Waterfront areas have associated services and terrain including yacht clubs and marinas for local watercraft.

How many greenways are there in Bergen Beach?

The Bergen Beach area is ripe with green spaces and several parks are operated by the city in the area. Joseph T. McGuire Park covers 77 acres and is located along the eastern coast of Bergen Beach. This park features many sports fields, including volleyball, baseball, football, tennis courts, and a roller hockey rink. There are also trails and a playground. This park and green areas continue along the eastern coast of the community, and include a yacht club and stretch down to the Jamaica Bay Riding Academy. This riding academy includes a large green space with trails, however, access by residents and dogs to this area is limited to the borders of the property. Other green spaces in the area are, however, accessible to pedestrians and pets, and provide lots of trees, shade and open areas for playing. Marinas make interesting walking destinations, and a walk along the water where cool breezes are more prevalent on hot summer days are enjoyed by locals and their hot hounds.
