Some large wilderness preserves and parks are located adjacent to and within Chelsea-Travis. Independence Park is located centrally and provides locals with three acres of trees, open areas, and benches with walking paths. Schmul Park, located at the entrance to Freshkills Park provides sports fields and recreational facilities to residents. The Freshkills Park can be accessed from here, with 2,200 acres under development. When completed, the space will be a park three times the size of Central Park. This wilderness area contains the Freshkills estuary and associated waterways. This large park has miles of trails, natural areas and fascinating ecological sites with flora and fauna located on and near the freshwater estuary. Northeast of the community, the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge is part of the developing Freshkills Park area and designed to preserve local wildlife. Meredith Woods is located to the north of the community, this area is mostly salt marsh, with fewer trees than the name suggest! It has limited accessibility for pedestrians and dogs but can be enjoyed from neighboring areas.
