Wag! Walkers know Columbia Street Waterfront District
The Columbia Street Waterfront District is a little neighborhood in Brooklyn, on the upper New York Bay waterfront. This neighborhood is composed of charming brick apartment buildings and lots of beautiful mature trees and well-maintained shrubbery. Apartment buildings are set well off the road and there is a good grassy space between the apartment building and the very wide and well-maintained sidewalk. Parking along the street gives an extra layer of protection between you and your dog and the road as you walk along these neighborhood streets.
Most of the shoreline is devoted to an industrial boatyard and is not great for walking along with your dog. That said, there is a bike trail that runs along the boatyards and marinas pretty much all the way along this shoreline. While there is enough room for you and your dog even if you are biking, you must have very good control in order to avoid oncoming bikes if riding in this area.
What is the terrain like in Columbia Street Waterfront District?
The Columbia Street Waterfront District offers pleasant, wide sidewalks that are richly planted with many trees, shrubs, and groundcovers, to provide a very enjoyable walking experience along the classic-looking brick apartment buildings.
Long straight blocks and wide sidewalks provide a good place for you to bike, rollerblade, or skateboard with your dog, provided you have good control to avoid oncoming pedestrians. While the many trees and shrub plantings that intersect the sidewalk can be frustrating to avoid while you are on wheels with your dog, these obstacles can also provide a good way for you to avoid pedestrians by simply taking the other side of the divided sidewalk.
If you are very talented at biking with your dog, you can follow the bike trail that runs along the boat yards through most of the Columbia Street Waterfront District. While this trail is not particularly wide and you will have to be skilled enough to get out of the way of other bikers, it is a lovely trail to follow, especially on hot New York days when sea breezes are very cooling.
How many greenways are there in Columbia Street Waterfront District?
Near the perimeter of this neighborhood is the small but charming Van Voorhees Park. While this park does not provide a lot of open grassy space, there are lots of pleasant mature trees, a lovely fountain, and plenty of playground areas and walking trails around the park. If you cross the perimeter of Columbia Street Waterfront District, you can enter into the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
This gorgeous park provides walking along the waterway, with lots of benches for seating, as well as expansive and well-maintained grassy areas and plenty of bushy shrubbery to make you feel like you are suddenly immersed into a wild place. The contrast between the maintained but semi-wild looking shrubbery and the stark city skyline of New York is very appealing, especially at sunset. Plenty of seating in this park will make sure you and your dog are comfortable. There is even a little outdoor seating area with picnic tables and umbrellas for you and your dog to enjoy.
