Wag! Walkers know DUMBO
The neighborhood that is located "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass" is referred to as DUMBO, and is located on the northern tip of Brooklyn. This small community has a thriving tech industry, arts scene, and a small residential population living in multi-story apartment buildings. Area residents working in the tech industry can walk to work and residents also can walk to art galleries, live theatres, and high-end restaurants and cafes. There are also large parks along the waterfront that are accessible on foot. Walking in DUMBO to access services can be hampered by wet weather. Although Brooklyn enjoys many warm, sunny days in spring and fall, winter can be cold and wet while rain can occur year round. You may need to take an umbrella to stay dry if you are running down the road to take your dog to explore Main Street Park. Don’t forget your dog as he may appreciate some rain gear to stay dry too!
What is the terrain like in DUMBO?
DUMBO is a small area that features some unique artificial terrain. This highly developed area is situated between, and under, two large bridges that are elevated above street level, creating overpasses and unique artificial landscapes with streets and structures exiting under them. There is a lot of traffic that uses these bridges on a daily basis to commute to and from nearby Manhattan and there is a lot of activity and noise associated with the area.

Along the northern border lies the waterway between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Waterfront parks boast views of the Manhattan skyline and views of the waterfront. The land in this neighborhood is flat and multi-story buildings provide shade to roads and sidewalks. Some areas have cobblestone streets and trendy commercial areas while many old warehouses in the area have been converted to residential or commercial use. When traveling in the area, pedestrians can make use of sidewalks that provide safe pedestrian ways.
How many greenways are there in DUMBO?
The Brooklyn Bridge Park runs along the west and northern border of DUMBO along the waterfront. This large park area contains several smaller park sections which include Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, Main Street Park, and John Street Park. There is a long greenway for cycling, jogging, or walking with your dog that extends from Pier 1 to Pier 6. Dogs need to be kept on their leash in all areas and parks associated with Brooklyn Bridge Park, except designated off-leash dog runs. If you need a bike to rent to cycle the greenway with your pup, the Pearl Street Triangle is located just to the east of the Manhattan Bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge Dog Park located under the Manhattan Bridge overpass and the Pier 6 Dog Run further along the greenway to the west provide fenced off-leash areas for your pup to play with other pooches. Main Street Park also has access to a fenced dog run.
