Far Rockaway is an attractive neighborhood on the Rockaway peninsula in Queens. It is a large neighborhood that is bordered by Banister Bay on one side and Mott's Basin on another. This neighborhood also runs down to the coast of the ocean so it encompasses some pleasant beach as well.

Homes in Far Rockaway are a mix of single-family homes and apartment buildings. Single family homes are generally attractive and set back from the street behind grassy lawns with landscaping. Most homes are fenced with chain link or wrought iron while the apartments tend to go right to the street. This creates a mixed experience when walking through the area, as some streets allow for relatively loose leash walking while others create a tight walking space. You'll want to keep your dog close by, to navigate the quick transitions.

To enjoy more natural exploration, head towards the beach or the natural marsh areas around Bannister Bay and Mott's basin.

The terrain of Far Rockaway is highly varied and because of this unpredictable terrain, you will find yourself alternating between walking your dog on a close leash and letting her range little bit, depending on what part of the area you're in.

For a natural walk, head towards Mott's Basin and the lovely little beach and natural shoreline that exists here. Be careful that you do not wander onto private property while you are exploring the shoreline, but the area provides plenty of opportunity away from housing.

It will be hard for you to resist the allure of the gorgeous white beach of Far Rockaway. Part of the beach is on the East Rockaway Inlet, and the rest is along the Atlantic Ocean. This is an extremely wide beach with lots of natural grassy dune coverage and a lovely trail along the  beach with plenty of benches for you to rest on between exploring with your dog.

Far Rockaway offers a natural environment on the beach that borders the East Rockaway Inlet and the ocean. A lot of area has been left undeveloped along the water so that you and your dog can explore the natural shrubbery and forest that runs up to the beach.

You have a great chance of seeing not only seagulls and marine life like dolphins from the beach, but also a range of interesting wildlife such as crabs, lizards, and other small animals in the natural shrubbery that runs up to the beach. Your dog will always find something new to discover that has been washed up as well.

If you are craving even more natural landscape, head towards Bannister Bay. There is not a boardwalk or other access to these water locked marshy areas, so in order to explore this area with your dog you will likely need a kayak or canoe.
