If you and your dog are strolling in the northern part of the New York City Borough of Brooklyn, chances are you'll be heading into the Flatlands neighborhood. This is one of the hidden gems of Brooklyn and maybe in all of the slowly gentrifying neighborhoods of New York. This area of the city at one time was its own village and was a center of farming and agricultural commerce. While walking through the busy city streets with their beautiful architecture, close your eyes and imagine what it would look like covered in crops like beans, corn, squash, and tobacco.

For dogs who have less interest in the historical architecture and more interest in grassy lawns and nice places to walk, there are several parks to relax and enjoy. There are plenty of benches to rest on and one park even has a beautiful water fountain to enjoy during the summer months.

Dog walking in the Flatlands neighborhood of New York is like a walk in the park. The terrain is mostly flat, as the name suggests. The same friendly topography that made this area wonderful for crops, makes it excellent for a stroll around the block with your dog. You can go for longer walks with the lack of hills and save joints from the grueling uphills and downhills found in some other cities. Most of Flatlands is paved and the sidewalks are well maintained.

Though there are plenty of streets that are great for walking, Flatlands is lucky enough to have three different parks to break up the landscape and allow your dog to smell the scents of nature, roll in the grass, and enjoy a break from the concrete. There are plenty of shade trees to stay cool on hot summer days and your dog will love feeling close to nature.

The biggest and most interesting park to go dog walking in Flatlands New York City is Amersfort Park. Perfect for an afternoon stroll after work or a nice weekend wind-down, there is a wide, smooth path to walk on and plenty of urban green space and trees to enjoy on the walk. The park has an interesting history, starting with the name that reflects Flatlands' old Dutch heritage. In fact, one of the biggest attractions at this three-acre park is the New Amersfort Boulder, a replica of a storied boulder dragged to the center of Amersfoot, Holland in 1661 on a bet. Despite the strange story, this boulder had become a symbol of the Flatlands neighborhood. Though your dog will take notice of the boulder, he might be more excited about the second attraction at the park, the Amersfort Park Memorial Fountain. This beautiful structure is one of Brooklyn's only public fountains.
