If you are tired of the constant crowds of New York, Floyd Bennett Field and the Gateway National Recreation Area may be just what you are looking for. This large peninsula is reserved for natural recreation, as well as aviation and athletic activities. What will be most exciting to dog lovers is the extensive walking and hiking trails offered on this peninsula.
A paved walking trail runs along the length of the highway that runs into this peninsula and all the way to its tip. Extensive hiking trails wander through the wilderness and wetlands area of the North Forty Natural Area, providing miles and miles of completely natural hiking that will make you forget you are in New York.
Even better, you can take one of these natural hiking trails down to a beach with a completely natural shoreline that your dog will absolutely love wandering along. There is not much that is better than a beach walk with your dog.
The primarily natural terrain of this area is thickly wooded with hiking trails surrounding the network of airplane runways. You can stick to the paved trail that runs along the road, or journey on to the well-maintained but largely unpaved hiking trail that wander through the forest. Follow a hiking trail down to the beach for an experience in wilderness exploration that is unlike any you can usually expect to find in New York.
The wild forest runs right up to the beach for a rare glimpse at a completely natural shoreline. Your dog will love wading through the water as well as exploring the wild shoreline. In some areas where sand has accumulated into banks, there are low grassy areas where can you can easily walk with your dog through the open.
If you are intending to allow your dog to wander into the water, make sure you are wearing good wading or hiking boots since the shoreline can be somewhat muddy in some areas.
This is one of the only places in New York where the terrain is primarily natural. This huge natural area is a refuge for all sorts of wildlife, despite its also being used as an airplane runway. You have a great chance of spotting all sorts of animal on one of the many sprawling hiking paths that surround the runways in this area, or from the beach.
The wild shoreline, which you can wander with your dog, will attract all sorts of wildlife that is looking for the opportunity to forage in this natural environment. Since you can see so far down the beach, you have a great chance of spotting something incredible. Even if you don't see wild deer, foxes, or turkey, you have a great chance of seeing a dolphin in the water, or a great variety of bird life both aquatic and terrestrial.
Boggy areas near the water also provide a great opportunity to see wildlife that exists in this special niche habitat. Your dog will enjoy smelling and seeing the creatures as well, but be careful that she does not bark at or interfere with wildlife that is already stressed by living in such a crowded metropolis.
