Wag! Walkers know Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge is a residential, middle-class neighborhood located in the northwest section of the Bronx, New York. Although much of the neighborhood consists of high rise apartments, multi-family units and single-family homes, there are also a variety of commercial establishments in the area, providing various services to residents. There are several schools in the district, that have sports grounds associated with them, though the southeast corner of Kingsbridge features a more commercial area with a large shopping mall, the Broadway Plaza. There are some veterinarians and pet services, including supply stores and groomers, in the area for pet owners to access.

The many schools, parks, commercial areas, restaurants and services located in Kingsbridge provide plenty of on-foot walking locations to access services by area residents, and you can enjoy walking with your dog to a variety of destinations. Weather in New York can vary according to the season, so check the forecast before venturing out on foot. This neighborhood is experiencing a surge in popularity as a residential neighborhood, with access to services, affordability, and ease of access to local Manhattan making it an exciting community with lots of development and new initiatives in place to watch for.

What is the terrain like in Kingsbridge?

The residential and commercial Kingsridge neighborhood features some sloping terrain and some gentle climbs are possible when walking in the neighborhood. There are some streets that are connected by stairways, referred to as “Step Streets” by locals, that can provide quite a rigorous workout while navigating between areas of different elevation, great for dog owners who want a workout with their dog. The area features plenty of attached, detached, and semi-detached residences in this well established and developed community. Single-family houses and large apartment complexes are intermixed with business, and some areas are predominantly commercial with many businesses, services, and shopping malls.  The area has lots of parks, sports grounds, and schools, and is bordered by some green areas. There are several major arteries and expressways running through this community, which can interfere with on foot travel. Traffic along these major roadways and in commercial areas is substantial and can pose a hazard to pedestrians and dogs.  Be sure to keep your dog secure and be aware of where you are going to avoid hazards in the area.

How many greenways are there in Kingsbridge?

There are several parks and green areas in and around Kingsbridge that make pleasant greenway travel possible for area residents. Located in Kingsbridge, Crescent Park is a small park with trees and park benches to enjoy a shady rest on a hot, humid, summer day in the Bronx. The larger Ewen Park is also centrally located in the community, and features just under eight acres of grassy and treed areas, with trails running through it to enjoy on-leash walks with your dog. There are plenty of shady areas to rest and this park features an off-leash, fenced dog run for area pups to romp with new furry friends. Schoolyards in the area also provide green play and walking areas for you and your dog, when students and sports teams are not using them, and the area along Greystone avenue in the north is heavily treed, and a pedestrian walkway running along this avenue provides plenty of greenway for a stroll with your dog any time of day.
