Marine Park is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. This community is largely residential, but there are lots of services and commercial areas dispersed throughout the neighborhood, which makes them easy to access on foot for residents. Your dog will appreciate going for a quick jaunt to the store, or to a local cafe with an outdoor patio that will let your dog join you in their outdoor seating. Be sure to check with local businesses regarding their rules for dogs.
Marine Park contains a large park of the same name and between the tree lined streets and local destinations, such as the Henrick L. Lott historic house, there are plenty of destinations to walk to with your dog.
New York has plenty of beautiful, hot, sunny days in summer. However, during the transition of seasons and winter, rain, and sometimes snowy, severe cold-weather storms occur. Be mindful of conditions in the area before choosing to travel on foot.
Marine Park has mostly flat terrain and streets are laid out in a grid pattern with the exception of the main artery, Nostrand Avenue, which is set at an angle and is the location of many commercial buildings. This area is somewhat different, in that businesses are distributed throughout the neighborhood, usually along main thoroughfares. However, commercial areas are not centralized, as is usually the case in urban areas. This makes many shops and services available on foot to locals and provides variety when walking through the neighborhood.
The area is well established and landscaping is mature, including large, shady trees along roads, especially on residential streets. The houses, townhomes, and apartment buildings in the area feature differing architecture with some traditional older homes, brownstones, brick, modern and wood structure homes. There is something different to see in the way of architecture and buildings around every corner in this interesting neighborhood.
Marine Park features a large park of the same name. Much of the park is a salt marsh that is supplied by freshwater, making for a unique and diverse ecosystem. Birds, rabbits, fish, and crabs are supported by this protected area and access to these areas are limited to nearby walking trails where you can view the natural areas. Some areas of the park have been developed to include sports fields, playgrounds, and a golf course. Amenities of this park include kayak and canoe launch sites, paddle boats, picnic sites, hiking trails, a skatepark, and an interpretive nature centre.
Dogs are welcome in most areas of Marine Park with the exception of sports fields, playgrounds, and protected natural areas. There is a waterway that surrounds White Island in the centre of the park which can be accessed by watercraft. Also located in the community is Commander Eugene S. Sarsfield playground and Aimee Triangle Park, both of which provide small green spaces.
