Mariners Harbor is located on Staten Island on the northwestern end of New York City. The neighborhood is bordered by Lake Avenue and Forest Avenue. Richmond Terrace is the road that runs alongside the harbor's edge and is the focal point of the neighborhood’s boating industry. In the 19th century, this was to mainly harvest oysters at the northern border.
The southern end of town has the ultimate pet store for your needs, boasting not only toys, food, and pet care, but groomers too. To add to this, the neighborhood hosts small dog-friendly playgrounds for the whole family to enjoy.
The neighborhood is typical of New York climate with snowy, white winters and hot, vibrant summers. This makes walking in the area beautiful all year round, with four distinct scenic seasons. This means walking your pup will always yield something to discover and something for them to stick their nose in.
The neighborhood is typically flat and easy to walk along. Although there are small inclines, there are no large hills for you and your pup to climb. This makes it perfect no matter your walking ability. This, combined with the sloped edges of sidewalks, makes the area accessible for everyone.
The district is fairly urban with sidewalks and buildings lining every street and corner. This is blended with trees and vegetation at the sides of the streets, giving the area an inner-city but residential feel.
Recently, the neighborhoods have become more green as a new, local food farm has opened in Mariner Harbour Houses, North Shore. This is moving the area from primarily urbanized to a greener, more eco- friendly environment. The area welcomes anyone from dogs walkers to residents and is great for you and your pooch to visit, especially on weekends when there is a farm stand.
If you walk along Richmond Terrace to Van Name Avenue, there is a small patch of green land that lines the Richmond Terrace Wetlands. This area is home to trees, shrubbery, and areas of grass. Here, you are able to walk your pooch while looking out onto the Bayonne Bridge and Newark Bay. There is a large array of vegetation that grows here such as sunflowers!
Boarding Walkers Street is an area of land that is perfect for playing catch with your little pup. It is a large field and open space and ideal as it is fairly central, making it easy to get to.
Green Force is a local charity working with the neighborhood to engage the youth. Since June 2018, they have opened green areas and are farming produce around the neighborhood. This would be great for you and your pup to have a walk around and support the local community!
